A woman’s descent into post-partum psychosis might not sound like your Friday-night popcorn flick, but when Jennifer Lawrence takes the lead alongside Robert Pattinson, with support from Sissy Spacek and LaKeith Stanfield, you sit up and watch. 



Based on Ariana Harwicz’s bestselling novel and directed by Lynne Ramsay (We Need to Talk About Kevin), Die My Love is dark, intimate, and hits uncomfortably close to home. It&#8217;s a white knuckle ride, there&#8217;s no way to sugarcoat it, but rest assured, you’re in safe (if unflinching) hands.

Lawrence and Pattinson (I know, double act of dreams) play new parents who’ve just moved into a rural house, one with a rather grim backstory involving a relative’s suicide. At first, it’s all passion and promise, but fast-forward a few months, the baby has arrived and so has the slow, steady unravelling of Lawrence’s character, Grace.

What begins as tiredness and disinterest grows into obsession, insomnia, anger, self-neglect and, eventually, acts of violence towards herself that are as desperate as they are disturbing. And Ramsay doesn’t shy away from showing the chaos: there’s a scene where Grace hurls herself through a glass door &#8211; a real jump scare &#8211; another where she cracks her head against a mirror. The most haunting? A bathroom meltdown where she drags her nails down this pretty, patterned wallpaper until both the room and she are in shreds. It’s frantic, visceral, and utterly exhausting to watch, but impossible to look away from.

There are moments of dry, black humour, you&#8217;ll be pleased to know, mostly through Grace’s deadpan wit, her ability to say the things we’ve all wanted to say to shop assistants, smug mums at baby groups or in response to the &#8220;it&#8217;s normal, I went through the exact same thing&#8221; comments she hears on repeat. These gems give brief, welcome breaths between the tension. 



Lawrence is magnetic. In madness, silence, even when stripped completely bare (and yes, I mean&nbsp;completely). She’s all in. And the result is one of the most powerful performances of her career. I know I am going to sound like the girl who cried Oscar but she&#8217;s another contender for Best Actress for sure.

Pattinson’s Jackson is instantly dislikable, and I&#8217;m sure uncomfortably familiar for many &#8211; swigging beer, heading to work, sleeping through the night feeds, oblivious to the subtle (and then not-so-subtle) changes in his wife. Though he earns his redemption later in the film: his portrayal of a husband torn between love, frustration, and denial is painfully believable. But alas, he commits her far too late.

Reality blurs in the film too which can be a bit confusing. A mysterious motorcyclist who whizzes past the house seems to morph into Stanfield’s Karl, with whom Grace may (or may not) be having an affair. Meanwhile, Jackson’s own infidelities &#8211; hinted at through the condoms in his glove box &#8211; make her loneliness and rage feel inevitable. Is it all in her head? Your guess is as good as mine.

Other shoutouts in the film goes to Sissy Spacek who plays Jackson&#8217;s gun-wielding, sleepwalking mum, who is going through her own kind of meltdown following the loss of her husband. And to the soundtrack which is phenomenal. A clever mix of haunting instrumentals and sharp, nostalgic tracks that mirror Grace’s unraveling perfectly. One minute it’s dreamlike and tender, the next it’s pulsing with a kind of claustrophobic energy that makes your chest tighten.

What sets&nbsp;Die My Love&nbsp;apart from other portrayals of postpartum depression is Grace’s unbroken connection to her baby. She never stops caring &#8211; her love isn’t in question. It’s the world around her that’s burning, and she’s both trapped in it and striking the match, literally.



It&#8217;s a hard watch &#8211; gruelling, raw, and deeply human. It leaves you feeling heavy, but also strangely grateful that someone finally dared to tell this story without softening the edges. There’s already plenty of buzz from its festival run (it even bagged a Palme d’Or nomination at Cannes, just FYI). Expect to be hearing a lot more about this one.

The Muddy verdict: It’s not for the fainthearted, but Lawrence is well worth the anxiety Die My Love will inevitably give you. Brave, blistering, and a must-watch &#8211; whether you’re a Tribute, a Twihard, or just after a belter of a film.
