Muddy Stilettos

Yellowstone fans, listen up &#8211; the spin-off we’ve all been waiting for has arrived, and it wastes absolutely no time reminding us what universe we’re in. Spoiler: it’s still guns-out, egos-out and cowboy chaos-on-full-speed.

I’ve seen the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DYPpYaiNXjy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">first two episodes</a> of&nbsp;Dutton Ranch&nbsp;(streaming now on&nbsp;Paramount+, with new episodes dropping weekly), and if you’re an OG&nbsp;Yellowstone&nbsp;fan you can relax: it takes about five minutes for everything to kick off. And by “kick off” I mean fires, fights, bullets and Beth making enemies before you’ve even finished your aperitif.

Episode one opens with Beth (the iconic Kelly Reilly) and Rip (Cole Hauser) enjoying a rare moment of domestic bliss on their Montana ranch… before, naturally, the entire place burns to the ground. Subtlety has never been this show’s strong suit, and honestly, would we have it any other way?



From there, it’s a fast move to South Texas for a fresh start. Beth, Rip, their adopted son Carter (Finn Little), and a herd of cattle head off in search of new beginnings &#8211; though, as ever, trouble is never far away.

We quickly meet Annette Bening’s formidable Beulah Jackson (who looks sensational I must add), a rival ranch owner who could end a man’s career with a single look. Her family brings its own share of drama too &#8211; including one son trying to keep things civil, and another who immediately manages to get on the wrong side of Rip at a petrol station. It goes about as well as you’d expect.

Elsewhere, Ed Harris appears as a world-weary veterinarian with an almost concerning commitment to saving every injured creature in sight, Carter lands himself in jail after a rodeo-related act of moral bravery, and someone is gunned down for asking the wrong kinda questions. Normal service, resumed.



And of course, this wouldn’t be the&nbsp;Yellow-verse&nbsp;without the full checklist: cattle drives, bucking broncos, dusty bars, country music, lingering stares across open land and plenty of rugged cowboys to swoon over.

But the real engine here remains Reilly and Hauser. Beth is still gloriously unhinged in the best possible way &#8211; sharp-tongued, sassy and endlessly watchable &#8211; while Rip remains the calm, brooding &#8220;you can&#8217;t chase peace Sweetheart&#8221;, centre holding the storm together. Their chemistry is as effortless as you remember, grounding the cowboy craziness around them.

If you already love the franchise,&nbsp;Dutton Ranch&nbsp;is exactly what you’re hoping for: bigger drama, familiar faces and absolutely no interest in slowing down. And if you’re new to it all? Consider this your invitation into the&nbsp;Yellow-verse (cowboy boots optional, but encouraged).
