The lovely people at the Northgate hotel and restaurant, in Bury St Edmunds are not only offering foodies a delicious and classy take on afternoon tea at home, but they are also donating the profits to Chestnut’s Giving Tree, to help towards putting home-cooked meals on the tables of local families who need support during the pandemic. The decadent box is £20pp and includes mushroom and spinach tartlets, smoked salmon and brioche bun, ham and mustard vol-au-vent, fruit scones, clotted cream and strawberry jam strawberry and rose macarons, a chocolate & coconut éclair with salted caramel and vanilla cream, lemon tartlets with toasted marshmallow and a Victoria sponge finger. Yes please! We might have to order one of these – well, it is for charity!

Two Magpies

If you can’t have breakfast in bed on Mother’s Day then when can you? The Two Magpies Bakery in Suffolk has been keeping locals going with its tasty treats over lockdown with a click and collect service for many of its amazing cakes and breads. This year they have the perfect cheer-up treat for your mum (or yourself) with a beautifully presented box of goodies that includes freshly squeezed orange juice, two lemon and blueberry muffins, two croissants, with homemade raspberry and vanilla jam, plus some Allpress cafetiere coffee. The hamper will also include a bunch of sunny Daffodils too – which we think is a lovely touch. Click and collect the Mother’s Day breakfast on Saturday 13 or Sunday 14 of March all available for £25 from all Two Magpie sites.

Harriets Tea Rooms with locations in Cambridge, Bury, and Norwich, deliver their afternoon tea boxes nationwide. The boxes are a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds making them ideal for a Mother’s Day gift. The great thing about afternoon tea is that you get a mix of both sweet and savoury goodies, so no wonder Sweet Things Savoury based in Wisbech, on the Cambs/Norfolk border, has got a great selection of Mother’s Day Treats for your mum this year. The traditional afternoon tea comes with a selection of sandwiches, sausage rolls, vegetable quiche and crisps, alongside the classic sweet treats, scone with butter, jam and cream, victoria sandwich slice and a chocolate brownie for good measure, all for £19pp. If you prefer sweet over savoury then how about the chocolate lovers version, which includes a chocolate chip scone with cream and chocolate spread, baked cinnamon mini doughnuts with chocolate sauce, Maltesers chocolate éclair with baileys and white chocolate mousse (£32.00). Wow – if that’s not chocolate heaven we are not sure what is. Delivery is available within a 20-mile radius of Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. If you or your Mum don’t live nearby then the brilliant owner Ginny has a bunch of baking kits, including one for G&T cupcakes, which we think would make a rather wonderful addition to any afternoon tea. These can be delivered nationally. We’re thinking a Zoom bake-along with Mum with a G&T in hand!

Fitzbillies is a Cambridge institution that celebrated its 100th birthday last year, and if anyone knows a thing or two about afternoon tea it’s them. They have no less than seven sumptuous Mother’s Day options to choose from this year, all available for nationwide delivery and including their famous ‘ultra-sticky’ Chelsea buns. They also come stocked with some beautiful pastel macarons, chocolate chip shortbread biscuits, and Mother’s Day decorated shortbread hearts. The Maplewood Bakery is a small bakery based in Old Windsor run by the talented Eleanor Savoury. She makes beautiful celebration and wedding cakes but has a collection of brownies and a delicious afternoon tea that can be delivered nationwide. They’re offering a Mexican Mother’s Day afternoon tea menu, £20pp, with tacos filled with refried beans, sour cream and jalapenos, scones, chocolate and chilli macarons and more. You could order an ordinary afternoon tea, but why not spend Mother’s Day indulging childhood nostalgia with a themed one? Joey’s Java encourage you to embrace the charmingly naff, as well as the obligatory finger sandwiches and tiny cakes. Alice in Wonderland, Winnie the Pooh, and Beauty and the Beast are all available as themed afternoon teas for delivery, complete with touches like a ‘Drink Me’ Alice in Wonderland potion bottle. The Wildflower Travelling Tea Party ordinarily offer their clotted cream and cucumber sandwiches on board their bus, for an on-the-go teatime treat. Times being what they are, you can now order from their long and varied list of afternoon tea packages to have at home instead. For mum, it has to be the £55 luxury Mother’s Day afternoon tea box, which offers four types of sandwiches, sweet and savoury scones, and seven types of cake. The box serves 2-4, and is available between 12 March and 14 March.

The Assembly House Mothers Day Tea is available from 10 March to 14 March, designed by Head Pastry Chef Mark Mitson. It includes finger sandwiches (honey roasted ham with grain mustard / egg and cress / smoked salmon and cream cheese) sausage rolls, Mitson’s mouth-watering parmesan and pistachio shortbread, and a selection of delectable cakes. Rhubarb & vanilla custard gateaux, anyone? For serious choc lovers, go for the triple chocolate scones with clotted cream and Nutella. If that’s not enough, you can add on champers and other extras. Norfolk Mead Hotel

The Norfolk Mead Hotel’s luxury afternoon tea comes with a few mum specials – choose from (or have it all) a hand-tied spring flower posy, a box of special chocs and a bottle of wine / Prosecco. Or, for gin folk, there’s the chance to snaffle a 70cl bottle of bespoke 1740 Black Shuck gin, distilled with blackberry and elderflower – yum. Sarnies include classics of chicken mayo and mixed leaf, or mature cheddar and ale chutney. There’s also pork and red onion thyme sausage rolls, scones, and of course some scrumptious cakes – lemon drizzle is a Muddy fave. Delivery up to 18 miles of Coltishall for £3.50 charge. This family-owned restaurant and hotel is a Mother’s Day favourite, with its focus on farm-to-fork food and gorgeous 15th century farmhouse. But as they can’t open until April (not long now), they’re bringing afternoon tea to your dear Mum instead. The Farmhouse’s sweet and savoury collection box comes with a range of delicious sandwiches and savouries, including quiche, Cumberland sausage rolls and Queenie’s fave munch: cucumber sarnies. As for the sweet stuff, there are all kinds of naughty offerings – from mini fruit tart to an incredible-sounding Hitchin honey gin drizzle cake with stem ginger frosting. Luton Hoo Hotel & Spa

Sitting within acres of green and leafy parklands, gardens and woodlands, this hotel and spa has always been booked up on 14 March. But you can guarantee your mum a taste of luxury from her very own home with their famous Afternoon Tea Takeaway. Made up of fluffy white scones covered in clotted cream and strawberry preserve, a range of freshly made sandwiches full of lovely bits and bobs, and a delish assortment of naughty cakes, they’ll also include Birchall Great Rift and Earl Grey tea bags for you to brew at home. Dottie’s Mother’s Day hamper is just pinkie-dink perfect! As always, her hampers come beautifully packaged and include the proper Mum’s Day essentials: china teapot and silver cutlery. As for the edible treats, you’ll find scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam (homemade, like most of Dottie’s treats), finger sandwiches, Scotch eggs, sausage rolls and three gorgeous cakes, all served on a vintage cake stand. This cutesy little café tucked away in Bennett’s Place, Market Harborough is a real hidden gem. The café turns 10 this year and owner Natalie has put together a tempting afternoon tea box that includes miniature lemon and raspberry sponge cakes, chocolate cheesecakes, macarons, biscuits and more. Normally a supplier of some of the country’s most prestigious restaurants, he found his clients closed due to lockdown, so steered his business in a new direction. The range of mainly Cornish foraged wild foods includes this unique and rather beautiful wild mother’s day afternoon tea hamper, complete with bouquet of dried flowers, gin with petals to add, chocolates as well as the most stunning macarons from North Cornwall’s The Garden Baker. £75, for delivery 11-12 March.

Ladyvale Bakery

Ladyvale Bakery in Nansledan is the pastel hued vision of Lara, the woman also behind Muddy multi-award winning Woods Café in Cardinham Woods. Her mother’s day treat boxes go on sale on 2 March at 6pm – but you’d better be quick as they usually sell out in a couple of hours. A single costs £10 and a double £18 (with £2 from each box will be donated to Mind). Each box will contain fresh lemon curd cupcake, meringue kisses, ruby and raspberry shortbread, pink Prosecco truffles, salted caramel macarons and chocolate ganache dipping sauce.
