<p>Sun Siyam Resorts’ <a href="https://www.sunsiyam.com/sun-siyam-iru-veli/">Iru Veli</a> is one of six hotels run by this <a href="https://sunsiyam.com/">Maldivian-owned hospitality group</a>, with five within three of the Maldives’ 26 atolls, southwest of Sri Lanka and India and a sixth resort that has recently been beautifully refurbished in Pasikudah on the east coast of Sri Lanka.</p>



<p>Iru Veli offers five star accommodation in Dhaalu Atoll, roughly 40 minutes by seaplane south of Malé and is part of the brand’s new top-rated Prive collection. <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe"><strong>THE VIBE</strong></h2>

<p>The approach to the resort by seaplane is breathtaking, with white sand beaches erupting from a turquoise sea so vibrant you’ll need your sunglasses. The famous curve of sea villas with their wooden walkways sets Iru Veli’s luxurious tone, and the resort is full of eye-rubbing moments of beauty &#8211; &nbsp;the grounds are pin-perfect, with plenty of staff to make your holiday as perfect as possible. But there’s also a pride in Maldivian culture, a connection with nature, and a genuine sustainability thread that runs throughout the company that’s very disarming and means Iru Veli dodges the prim pretention that often dogs five star resorts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stay"><strong>STAY</strong></h2>



<p>The money shot for the Maldives are always the sea villas and it’s hard to over-emphasise the luxury of the accommodation here – probably better expressed visually!</p>

<p>Fifty seven of the 125 villas at this resort sit over the water, all with private plunge pools and huge, light-filled bathrooms. There’s a lovely deck outside for sunbathing, from which you can access the sea directly, and – importantly for couples or those like me who fancied a float in the pool sans bikini – there’s totally privacy from your neighbours. For obvious reasons families with children under 12 should book the beach villas (full disclosure: I actually prefer beach to overwater villas – there’s something about your own stretch of beach that’s pretty alluring). </p>

<p>However, Iru Veli does offer special 124m <a href="https://www.sunsiyam.com/sun-siyam-iru-veli/accommodation/dolphin-ocean-villa-with-pool/">Dolphin Sea Villas</a> for 3 adults or 2 adults/2 children – helpfully including a personal beach area on the decking where your kids can play while you’re looking out for the dolphins that often swim around the area.&nbsp; </p>

<p>Whichever accommodation option you choose, there’s a personal bar refilled every day as part of the Premium all-inclusive offering, a buggy that will pick you up any time of day or night to take you around the resort, and 24/7 room service. Seriously, it’s heaven.</p>

<p>Ivu Veli offers six restaurants and bars, from the informal every day dining at Aqua Orange and the relaxed Grouper Grill to the more upscale restaurant setting with Roma, an excellent Italian restaurant overlooking the water. </p>

<p>Even the buffet breakfast offering is phenomenal, with a welcome emphasis here on introducing Maldivian food to visitors, as well as the more familiar options. There’s also 24/7 in-house food in your room if you’re flaked out from a day of hard relaxing, on the premium all-inclusive plan.</p>



<p>I did try the <a href="https://www.sunsiyam.com/sun-siyam-iru-veli/experiences/floating-breakfast/">Floating Breakfast</a> one morning – an additional cost, you can choose between a continental or cooked breakfast with bubbles where the food is brought on a tray that basically floats in the water as you take to the plunge pool. Quite fun if you don’t mind chasing your tray around the water and possibly cuter when there’s two of you in the pool. </p>

<p>I’d recommend a continental rather than cooked version if you’re short like me, as it’s hard to cut your meal when it’s floating above your shoulders, but I can’t fault drinking a glass of Champagne looking out over the ocean at any time of day.</p>

<p>Full disclosure, I’m a total spa nut so, YES, the overwater Ocean Spa with a main spa house and 8 individual pavilions is always going to go down well with me. It also means that I’m very fussy so you can trust me when I say you’ll spend some happy hours here! There’s an airy atrium where I was served drinks before heading on through to a large private pavilion for a superb full-body massage using Thalgo products. There’s a mix of Hawaiian, Thai, and Balinese treatments here alongside more western approaches. Yoga, pilates, breathwork, meditation are all offered one-to-one or as couples.</p>

<p>The allure of all-inclusive, even amongst luxury resorts, continues to grow, and this is Sun Siyam Resorts’ sweet spot. Iru Veli’s offering includes all dining, spa voucher or diving for those certified, motorised water sports credit, guided snorkelling, local island visit and a dolphin sunset cruise.</p>

<p>The reef is your playground here, metres from the villas with water-skiing, jet-skiing, . &nbsp;I spent most days enthusiastically snorkelling around the house reef, and truly it’s spectacular – it was a relief to see the reef here still showing itself in vibrant colours and with over 2,000 species of fish in the area, we saw everything from stingrays and turtles to manta rays and reef sharks.</p>



<p>It’s easy enough to snorkel solo of course and you can just grab a snorkel set from the dive reception, but I’d recommend going with a guide, as they know the best areas and are also able to explain what you’re seeing. Also, I’m a bit of a sissy about sharks (come on, wouldn’t you be?) so it gave me a bit more confidence. The weather didn’t allow it when I was visiting but there’s a phenomenal-sounding whale-shark trip where you get to snorkel near these magnificent creatures – definitely one I’d do next time.</p>



<p>For those who can dive or want to learn, SSI diving courses are available here and there are regular trips out to explore shipwrecks and the deeper shelves of the house reef. Away from the water, the resort has a number of tennis courts, and a fitness centre and the hotel also puts on interesting cultural activities, where the local staff show how to make coconut oil, cook Maldivian dishes or basket weave.</p>

<p><strong>Good for:</strong> Those looking for affordable luxury in the Maldives – the all-inclusive offering, whether you’re travelling as a couple or family, is really quite something. Service here is excellent, facilities are pin-perfect and there’s an authentic vibe that comes from a proudly Maldivian company.</p>



<p><strong>Not for: </strong>If you’re not keen on hopping on that second flight after landing in Malé, you may prefer an island closer to the mainland that’s accessible by speedboat. Iru Veli is a laid back resort and evenings tend to wrap up around midnight so if partying is your priority, move on.</p>



<p><strong>The damage</strong>: Prices start from £692 per night for up to two adults and two children under 12 sharing a beach villa with pool on premium all-inclusive. I mean seriously, that’s better value than the Med. </p>
