Wedding season is upon us, and if you haven’t already cried into a clutch bag or drunkenly insulted a cousin this month – fear not. You’ve got an invite to the most chaotic&nbsp;wedding of the year, and it&#8217;s now on stage at London’s gloriously OTT Theatre Royal Haymarket. Beth Steel’s&nbsp;<a href="https://muddystilettos.tixculture.com/london/shows/43966-till-the-stars-come-down" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Till The Stars Come Down</a>&nbsp;has swaggered in from the Dorfman at the National Theatre, trading its intimate black box for red velvet opulence of the West End.



Yes, this Midlands-set marriage meltdown has made the move from village hall realism to glitterball grandeur – and hasn’t lost an ounce of its boozy, bawdy brilliance. The larger stage&nbsp;amplifies&nbsp;the emotional carnage. Think:&nbsp;EastEnders&nbsp;meets&nbsp;Chekhov, with an open bar and a lot of unresolved trauma.

So, what’s it all about? Sylvia (the electric Sinéad Matthews, all jangling nerves and scratchy vowels) is marrying Polish lad Marek (Julian Kostov – yes,&nbsp;that&nbsp;Julian from&nbsp;White Lotus, still gorgeous, now clothed but smouldering nonetheless). Around them swirls a family straight out of your worst wedding WhatsApp group: bigoted sister Hazel (Lucy Black, blisteringly good), romantic-ruin Maggie (Aisling Loftus, giving messy millennial heartbreak), and the absolute&nbsp;scene-stealer&nbsp;– Aunty Carol.

Let’s take a moment for&nbsp;Dorothy Atkinson’s Aunty Carol, shall we? A walking wine stain in rollers. She’s all Lily Savage one-liners and inappropriate innuendo. Aunty Carol enters, insults&nbsp;everyone, dances like no one’s watching (but they&nbsp;are) – her moves to Britney&#8217;s Dangerous are impressive and horrifying in equal measure. And yet in spite of her quips and larger than life energy, she still finds time to sob about lost dreams by the buffet. It’s comedy gold with gut-punches underneath. Olivier panel, take note.

And then there’s one of the youngest cast members: Leanne, a teen with the world’s biggest emotional radar. Ruby Thompson barely speaks, but her side-eye could win awards. One minute she’s painting her nails on the carpet the next she’s silently carrying the weight of her broken family. 



Politics? Oh yes. Steel’s writing slices deep. Underneath the Buck’s Fizz and bickering, it’s a portrait of a post-industrial red wall community reeling from the loss of jobs, hope and identity. The resentment towards immigrants – voiced via barbed comments and full-on rants – is painfully familiar. But this isn’t preachy theatre; it’s too smart for that. These are complex people, not caricatures, and Steel lets them mess up, make us laugh, then crush our hearts in the same breath.

And yet, the magic of Till The Stars Come Down is how it mixes the mundane with the majestic. One moment you&#8217;re in a shouty family spat over vol-au-vents, the next there&#8217;s a moment of visual poetry – a slow-motion scene, Vivaldi over the speakers, a glitterball scattering tiny truths across the stage, before Nelly&#8217;s Hot in Herre opens the dancefloor. Samal Blak’s minimal set and Gareth Fry’s brilliant sound design keep it all elegantly messy. Like life.

Special mentions? Oh go on then. Julian Kostov as Marek&nbsp;is&nbsp;divine. Dignified, kind, increasingly desperate, and then… no spoilers, but let’s just say&nbsp;that&nbsp;scene in Act Two had us gasping. He brings the fire&nbsp;and&nbsp;the nuance. Alan Williams as Tony, the widowed dad of the bride, is heartbreak in a suit. When he finally speaks his truth, the air leaves the room.

And last but not least, Bijan Sheibani’s direction&nbsp;is masterful. This could so easily become shouty soap opera – instead it dances between naturalism and myth with thrilling ease. One minute you’re chuckling at greying pubes, the next you’re staring into the void of human longing. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict">THE MUDDY VERDICT</h2>



A wild, wise, wincingly funny wedding party of a play. You’ll laugh hard and possibly develop PTSD from the dancing. It&#8217;s a glorious, glittering mess – and we’d RSVP &#8216;yes&#8217; again in a heartbeat. Before you go, have Frankie Valli&#8217;s Can&#8217;t Take My Eyes Off Of You in your musical locker. Oh, and don’t sit on the stage if you&#8217;re afraid of being dragged into a conga line or within swinging distance of family blows.
