Vibrator necklace!? Celebs selling the wackiest things

Vibrator necklaces, shoes that look like plastic aliens... Muddy raises an eyebrow at the most popular celebrity brands of the past year, and what they're harking.

These days it seems like every celebrity from A-Z is slinging some kind of product, but who are the big hitters? And most importantly: do they pass the Muddy litmus test? Armed with a new study on the hottest celebrity brands of 2021, revealing the most popular celebrity brands of the past year, here’s what you need to put on your birthday list.

1. KANYE WEST’S YEEZY

Instagram / @yeezymafia

Kanye’s been busy lately: in between getting papped with his new girlfriend, donning quadruple (!) denim, and changing his name to the rather punchy “Ye”, he’s officially ranked as the number one most popular celebrity clothing brand of the past year. Thanks to 3.2 million Insta followers and 32.8 million searches, Yeezy was six times more talked about than Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty in 2021. The products are almost impossible to get hold of — think odds of 2000/1 just to get a ‘Yeezy raffle ticket’, which lets you purchase a single pair of trainers — and have an absolutely crazy resale value. That’s business, baby.

WHAT’S FOR SALE

Veering wildly between absolutely hideous and kind of cool, the Yeezy range really keeps you guessing. On the one hand: thick, mud-coloured sliders (swamp chic?) and on the other a strangely appealing Martian take on Crocs. If you’ve always wanted to wear an alien jellyfish on your foot, this is the shop for you.

THE MUDDY VERDICT

The God complex of it all is just a bit of a turn-off. Pretentiously designed trainers you haven’t a hope in hell of actually buying (or running in for that matter)? Sorry, it’s a no from us, Ye.

2. GWYNETH PALTROW’S GOOP

Instagram / @gwynethpaltrow

Obviously Goop has to be on this list. Gwyneth Paltrow’s wellness empire is officially the most popular celebrity wellness brand of the past year, with 2.9 million searches and 1.7 million Instagram followers. That’s 34 times more popular than runner-up brand Happy Dance (by Frozen and The Good Place‘s Kristen Bell). Kooky and occasionally controversial, Goop’s famous as a purveyor of vagina eggs and bonkers alternative medicine, as well as plant-based skincare. Anyone else kind of tempted by a vagina candle?

WHAT’S FOR SALE

Here’s some thinking outside the box for you: next time your outfit is missing a certain je ne sais quoi, how about this vibrator necklace? That’s right, this is a VIBRATOR NECKLACE. Okay, sure, it’s surprisingly chic, but it’s still a gold-plated sex toy on a chain. What do you say when someone asks about it? “This old thing? Just a little something to bring me joy…”

THE MUDDY VERDICT

Mad as a hatter, but good for entertainment. If you take the skincare and leave the £70 quartz tuning forks (for making a sound “like clarity feels”, obviously), Goop gets a wry Muddy pass.

3. KIM KARDASHIAN’S SKIMS

Image: Skims

With 12 million searches a year since its 2019 debut and 3.7 million Insta followers, Kim Kardashian’s clothing and lingerie brand Skims is eighth in the ten most popular celebrity brands of the last year. Sure, there’s some cute stuff — it’s an appealing medley of comfy and sexy — but, let’s be real, the outfits are almost entirely unforgiving of the squidgy belly. On Kim K and her models it’s sexy and shapely, on us it’s squashy sausage casing.

WHAT’S FOR SALE

Buy this and you, too, can look like a Polly Pocket doll. For real: can someone please tell us when we’re expected to wear this? If even the model can’t make a strange, skintight adult baby-gro with nursery-style buttons look sexy, what hope is there for the rest of us? Also, how do you pee? Staggeringly, this item is already sold out in almost every size.

THE MUDDY VERDICT

You won’t be catching us in a sheer sculpt catsuit anytime soon, that’s for sure — but we can’t begrudge the 20-year-olds for flaunting a bit of sauce about the house. As you were, Skims.

4. RIHANNA’S SAVAGE X FENTY

Instagram / @badgalriri

A lingerie brand that champions inclusivity, Savage X Fenty by (now pregnant!) Rihanna is the tenth most popular celebrity brand (across all categories) of the past year. That’s down to 5.4 million searches and 4.7 million followers on Insta — on top of a further 10.2 million Insta followers and 6.6 million searches a year for sister brand Fenty Beauty. With both brands pointedly catering to a range of sizes and skin tones, it’s good to see that inclusivity sells (and sells). Think it’s safe to say Rihanna can head off onto maternity leave without too many concerns.

WHAT’S FOR SALE

Shouldn’t everyone’s partner own a mesh super-cropped top with pec-cleavage? Alas, you’ll have to knit your own, this one’s completely sold out. And the cheeky number on the right? We’ll respect the confidence from the comfort of our Bridget Jones knickers, thank you very much.

THE MUDDY VERDICT

Exposed butt cheeks and bright mesh tops aside, Savage X Fenty sells some genuinely gorgeous lingerie. Add in the fact that it caters for all, and you’ve got a full Muddy seal of approval.
