The best bedroom buys for summer
It's the summer solstice on Saturday - great for hippies, less so for insomniacs. If you're struggling to sleep during these short nights, help is here.
Can’t get no sleep? Join the club! As we approach the summer solstice, what with the super-short nights, rising temperatures and the birds starting to wang on at 4am (anyone got a catapult?), it’s ridiculously hard to get eight hours shut-eye right now. So we’ve collated the most chic sleep helpers around. Ready, steady, zzzzzz.
Desmond & Dempsey has always been our go-to for luxe nightwear, and their new summer collection features some to-die-for prints, including this blue and white linen nightdress, inspired by Udaipur, India. It’s light and breezy enough to wear all summer – plus, simply pop on some sandals and lippie and you’re ready for a garden party.
A anti-ageing pillowcase that can defeat bedhead and give us supermodel looks? Hey, if it’s good enough for Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, right? Silk pillowcases have anti-static properties, leaving hair smooth and your expensive night cream on your skin, rather than soaking into your bedding. We’re fans of this retro chic pink number from slip™.
With sunrise due at a teeth-clenching 4.43am on summer solstice, you’re going to need something to block out those rays until a more reasonable hour. This padded silk sleep mask from Jessica Russell Flint should do the trick nicely (and if you’re a fan of the celestial print, there are matching PJs and pillowcases too).
Struggling to nod off in the summer heat? Chuck the sleeping tablets and take the natural route with these calming drops from Oxon-based beauty gurus ila spa. Simply add a couple of drops to your bedside glass of water (or pop them straight under your tongue) and let the chamomile, belladonna, orange blossom and liquorice do their thing. We’re feeling sleepier already…
The closest we’ll come to sleeping under real palm trees this summer (*sob*), this Palmier bedding set is a cheering alternative. Made from 100% cotton sateen, these 300 thread-count sheets will keep you cool in all temperatures, plus the embroidered gold design is ideal for adding a luxe touch to the bedroom. Grab ’em at Alresford Linen Co in Winchester (who – bonus – can also do your dry cleaning at the same time).
We’re big fans
While most desk fans look like something out of a dingy ’80s office block, this rose gold number from Dunelm is a slightly more stylish take on a summer bedroom must-have. Plus, it’s a total snip at just £30. Top tip: keep bedroom windows closed until an hour before bed, then open them to let the cooler night time air in and turn on the fan to circulate it. By the time you’re ready to sleep, you’ll have a nice chilly room.
La vie en robe
No matter the state of your mismatched jim jams, chuck this gorgeous silk robe over the top and you’re ready to face even the most discerning postman. The Ethical Silk Company’s mulberry silk robes, nightwear and pillowcases have graced the pages of Vogue, Marie Claire and Elle, so you know you’re in good company too.
Ditching the caffeine before bed is always top of the list when it comes to restful sleep tips, but if a hot drink in the evening is part of your routine (even in summer), swap it for something a little more herbal. This B Silent night-time tea from Bamford is made with lavender and passion flowers, hemp leaves, lemon balm and valerian root. Sounds like potpourri, but does the job.
A wool duvet might sound like the last thing you need in summer, but this super lightweight offering from Devon Duvets is cool enough to cope with our bonkers British heatwaves. As natural wool is more breathable than synthetic fabrics, it’ll make short work of any night sweats too.
£125 for a double
If you’re after a purse-friendly mist, good news – Sanctuary Spa have recently launched a new sleep collection, which includes this sweet-scented bottle. The jasmine, patchouli and frankincense fragrance is guaranteed to relax, and with an extra hit of hyaluronic acid in the mix, you can spritz on your skin to cool down and hydrate. Talk about multi-tasking.
PJ drawer looking woeful? Treat yourself to this classic pin-dot set from The White Company. They’re beautifully light and floaty, ideal for reclining on the chaise-longue, sipping Bucks Fizz, on a Sunday morning (well, in my fantasy life, at least).
