Muddy Stilettos


<p>Stop the press: Ferrari has launched its first fully electric car. <em>Pause for dramatic effect.</em> OK, unless you&#8217;re on first-name terms with your Ferrari dealer (or quietly sitting on that £12m unclaimed lottery ticket), this might not have been on your radar. But in luxury motoring circles, the arrival of the <a href="https://www.ferrari.com/en-EN/auto/ferrari-luce" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ferrari Luce EV</a> is a genuinely seismic moment – and, naturally, it&#8217;s already causing a bit of a stir.</p>

<p>The controversy? Surprisingly, it isn&#8217;t the battery or the price – it&#8217;s an eye-watering $640,000 (approx £475,625). Traditional Ferrari fans have been turning up their noses at the styling, with some online critics comparing the practical five-seat, four-door hatchback to far more everyday EVs (the Nissan Leaf even got dragged into the chat – ouch). Former Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo didn&#8217;t hold back either, warning it risked &#8220;the destruction of a legend&#8221;. Even the launch colour – a pale blue rather than iconic Ferrari red – had petrolheads spluttering into their espressos.</p>



<p>Looks aside, this is still very much a Ferrari. With a reported 0–60mph time of around 2.5 secs and a top speed north of 190mph, it&#8217;s hardly lacking in performance. Ferrari also enlisted legendary Apple designers Sir Jony Ive and Marc Newson to help shape the car, while the brand insists the Luce is attracting a new generation of younger, tech-savvy buyers who would never have considered a traditional V12 in the first place.</p>

<p>For the rest of us, ownership remains somewhere between &#8220;buying a château in Provence&#8221; and &#8220;finally hiring that live-in housekeeper&#8221;. But, like an Hermès Birkin, it&#8217;s still fun to admire from afar. <p><strong>The skinny:</strong> Perhaps the most logical luxury EV of all. Buttery soft leather, thick carpets and posh trims. Think private jet on wheels.</p>

<p><strong>The skinny:</strong> Lamborghini&#8217;s all-electric &#8220;Ultra GT&#8221; concept caused a huge buzz, but the company has reportedly shelved the production version amid cooling demand for luxury EVs</p>

<p><strong>The skinny:</strong> Britain&#8217;s answer to the hypercar. Over 2,000bhp, just 130 built, and a hugely dramatic bodywork that make it appear more spaceship than sports car.</p>

<p><strong>Price:</strong> Predicted to be between £160,000 and £200,000</p>



<p><strong>The skinny:</strong> While Bentley does not currently make a pure electric supercar, it is preparing to launch its first-ever battery electric vehicle (BEV) at the end of 2026. But don’t expect a low-slung supercar, instead the silhouette is expected to be, what the brand terms, a &#8220;Luxury Urban SUV&#8221;.</p>
