Muddy Stilettos


<p>If there’s one resort that enthusiastically shrugs off the perception of the Maldives as a placid honeymooners destination &#8211; all white sand beaches and Insta-sunsets and not much else to do other than you-know-what &#8211; it’s <a href="https://www.sunsiyam.com/siyam-world/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Siyam World,</a> Nestled within the beautiful Noonu Atoll, this 24-hour, all-inclusive resort, part of the Lifestyle Collection of Maldivian-owned resort group Sun Siyam, is the Indian Ocean’s adrenaline-fuelled luxury interloper. </p>

<p>Here you’ll find Maldives’ largest floating water park; electric go-carts; twirly slides that cascade you into the ocean from your overwater villas; jet car water rides that blow jet skis out the water; not to mention the country’s first in-resort horse ranch (yes really, all 16,000 square metres of it) where you can hire one of the rare-breed North Indian Marwari horses for sunrise or sunset beach rides. &nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-shipwreck">The shipwreck</h2>



<p>Now Siyam World has added another string to its bow – a brand new shipwreck dive site and the foundation of a future living reef. So, you know, no biggie! Weighing nearly 500 tonnes and measuring over 66m in length, a former Maldivian tuna freighter was sunk in 2024 (then repositioned in 2025 as it had unfortunately landed on its side).</p>

<p>Prior to its official launch a few weeks back as a dive site for Siyam World guests, I was invited to be the first UK lifestyle journalist to experience the new shipwreck experience. I’ll put my hand up here and admit I’m not a diving fanatic chasing the currents for her next sharky thrill, just your average PADI-certified opportunist. That&#8217;s kind of the point though, because the brilliant thing about this dive site is how accessible it is to all abilities, from tri-diver to seasoned pro. The bow sits high in the water, facing the reef at just 10 metres depth, and dropping to a maximum of 24 metres at the stern. I was happy traversing the length of the boat from above, but more experienced divers can go deeper or even a little into the metal structure.</p>

<p>As the ship is a relatively new addition to the sea bed, I wasn’t expecting much in the way of established marine life, but the Maldivian sea creatures have already clocked the des res memo, so I found myself sharing my dive with stingrays, moray eels, groupers and angelfish, plus several blacktip reef sharks. I wasn’t brave enough to follow the sharks on their journey as they glided past (full disclosure: if I was any closer to my dive instructor we&#8217;d have shared a mask), but sharks are an accepted, no-big-deal part of sea life out here, and it was an amazing eperience to share the waters with them.</p>

<p>Surprisingly, with such a short length of time since its sinking, soft and hard corals were already establishing themselves across the steel skeleton; an ideal scenario as the equally important ambition for this shipwreck is its potential as a pioneering artificial reef project. <em>Wreck to Reef</em> is Siyam World’s new annual conservation initiative. The idea is that coral growth, biodiversity and ecosystem development will be shared every three months with guests, allowing them to be active participants in ocean measurement and restoration.</p>



<p>With this in mind, we’d been out snorkelling&nbsp; the day before with Shah, the resident marine biologist at Sun Siyam Iru Veli resort, looking and charting the health of the coral against what I can only describe as the underwater edition of ‘select your ideal tea colour’ chart. Bleached coral is clearly a very weak cuppa, bright coral is your classic strong builder’s. </p>

<p>Whilst the shipwreck had felt otherworldly and awash with peaceful blues, this snorkel trip amongst the largely healthy reef was a riot of spectacular reef fish, the black tip and lemon sharks, and hawksbill turtles knocking the rocks for food or floating, unhurried, on their journeys. These are all photos from the actual snorkel with no retouch so what you see is what you get! If you’re not confident to dive but want your tropical reef fix in a sustainable way, this is a great place to start.</p>

<p>As for the new dive site, it’s now fully open to Siyam World guests, as well as visitors (for an additional fee) from around the Noonu Atoll. So whether you want to lean into Siyam World’s action-packed ethos or just take a day trip to enjoy this spectacular wreck, it’s well worth factoring it into your next Maldives adventure.</p>
