Ikos Andalusia, Spain

When a hotel’s ranked the best family-friendly resort in the world on Tripadvisor (more than 1,600 5-star reviews), we take note. So what makes Ikos such a winner? According to guests it’s an unbeatable combination of huge pool, great location (by a beach and a stroll from Marbella old town), rooms, suites and villas big enough to fit a family, Michelin-star food, friendly staff, well-stocked complimentary mini bars and a bundle of extras – from bike hire to a football club for little ones. The Land of Legends Kingdom Hotel, Turkey

Wow! Keep the wine consumption down, the room decor is A LOT! We have a hunch the Antalya-based fun palace, part of the Rixos Group, was actually designed by kids. These guys understood the assignment and created a hotel resort with kids in mind. Think vast indoor and outdoor swimming pools (including a wave pool), lazy river, waterslides, theme park with rollercoasters, 5D cinema, playgrounds and brightly-coloured bedrooms with a PlayStation installed. It’s Utopia – and tired parents can recuperate in the spa, around the adult pool and in the excellent restaurants, so it’s smiles all round.

The kind of resort your kids will talk about with awe and beg to return to. It’s not by a beach, but there’s a free shuttle bus to one nearby if you get the urge, though with a spa, adult-only pool and kids’ club in the mix, we might just fly and flop.
