<p>It’s official, <a href="https://guide.michelin.com/gb/en/article/news-and-views/the-michelin-guide-introduces-a-new-distinction-in-the-world-of-wine" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Michelin</a> is moving into wine. Announced in December, the famously exacting guide has unveiled its new Grapes distinction, designed to spotlight the crème de la crème of France’s wine producers. To put it simply, it&#8217;s the vino equivalent of a Michelin Star. Naturally, this has sent oenophiles around the world into a gentle flutter, and with the very first grapes set to be awarded in Burgundy and Bordeaux this year, it&#8217;s given us an excellent excuse to plan a trip. Think chic rooms, long sun-soaked lunches, spectacular views and gentle strolls around the vines. Here&#8217;s our pick of the best vineyard hotels French fantasies are made of (plus a few a bit closer to home).</p>

<p>Escape to wine country at this gorgeous whitewashed château in Burgundy’s southern Côte d’Or region. As far as settings go, this one&#8217;s pretty spectacular. Kick back with a glass of the good stuff by the outdoor heated pool as you overlook 9 hectares of the Prosper Maufoux wine estate vines. Inside, the four bedrooms have been recently reimagined with contemporary flair – each with its own sweeping panoramic views. There are cellar tours and tastings, vineyard cycling, plus a fantastic restaurant by Michelin-starred chef Édouard Mignot. </p>

<p>I mean, it already boasts one Michelin Key (an accolade marking the world&#8217;s most spectacular stays), so you know you&#8217;re in for a treat. Village life has had quite the glossy upgrade since COMO Le Montrachet cropped up &#8211; a 19th-century &#8216;place du village&#8217; inn that has been sympathetically revitalised with custom-designed furnishings and a warm palette that echoes the surrounding countryside. The 25m outdoor pool is open from May to Sept, there&#8217;s a stunning restaurant, 28 ultra-luxe rooms and suites, and a carefully curated list of experiences for guests to enjoy, from wine tasting to cookery classes.</p>

<p>Oenophiles will fall head over heels for this historic family wine estate. In fact, it&#8217;s one of Burgundy’s oldest vineyards and offers the chance to spend a charming long weekend working through bottles of Premier Cru, broken up by lazy hours of poolside flopping. Guest rooms are located within the castle grounds, plus there&#8217;s also the separate Friends&#8217; House with room for up to 20 people and 360° views of the vines. Stunning.</p>

<p>Some pretty legendary wine is produced at the adjoining estate of Cos d’Estournel. Nowadays, you&#8217;ll find a luxurious 14-room, one Michelin key boutique hotel that sits pretty around an hour from Bordeaux, nestled between city and sea. Sumptuously designed by Alex Michaelis (of Soho House fame), onsite there&#8217;s an open restaurant to ogle the chefs at work, a wellness yurt, outdoor pool with vineyard vistas, and wine. Lots of wine. This is a bolthole with serious suave factor.</p>

<p>Few hotels in the world flaunt an exceptional three Michelin Keys, but this is one of them. Not only that, but the countryside retreat boasts a two Michelin-starred restaurant (with an unsurprisingly insane wine list), a bistro-style inn using produce grown in the organic vegetable garden, a wine bar, and 62 sumptuously decorated rooms and suites. Still, the clincher is the vinotherapy spa, with beauty treatments and products infused with wine minerals and grapes that halt ageing in its tracks. In fact, Caudalie is now a global brand in its own right. Even King Charles and Camilla paid a visit to the hotel back in 2023 for its commitment to organic and biodynamic farming, and to taste the home-grown nectar for themselves. </p>

<p>What&#8217;s not to love about the highest altitude wine estate in Bordeaux? The views, as you might imagine, are breathtaking. Saint-Émilion is one of the quaintest spots for a wine-fuelled escape, but paired with a stay at Les Clefs de Troplong Mondot Clefs, with its Michelin-starred restaurant and four upscale, family-style guest bedrooms, is pretty special. Alongside highly renowned wines, they even make honey on the estate, too.</p>

In fact, you&#8217;ll be sleeping as close as you can humanly get to the greenery without inhaling the grapes. No detail has been overlooked &#8211; from the hand-curated furnishings to the jacuzzi bath, barrel sauna, and private decked terrace to watch the sun set. Bliss.</p>

<p>Tucked away alongside the banks of the River Dart, Sandbridge Barton has been producing exceptional bottles of the good stuff for over 40 years, with 38 acres of vineyards ripe for harvest. Sink your chops around the ingredient-led, seasonal menu at ROAM Restaurant before retiring to one of the three self-catering accommodations on site. The gorgeous 1850s boathouse is a particular highlight that literally sits in the water and makes checking in feel rather special indeed.</p>

<p>Biodynamic, natural wines are the name of the game at charmingly rustic Tillingham &#8211; one of the newer vineyards (and cooler kids) in the winemaking world. Work your way through the entire wine list on the terrace (light work), best polished off with a wood-fired pizza. The renovated farmstead boasts 11 McCully and Crane-designed rooms, plus happy campers will love sleeping under the stars in the bell tents that come with their own vineyard views, private terrace, and wood burner. There&#8217;s of course the Michelin Green Star restaurant too. An unbeatable culinary experience. </p>
