5 new European spas you need to know about

From city sanctuaries to calm coastal escapes and amazing mountainside retreats, here are some of the best spas to visit in 2023 offering everything from mood-enhancing journeys to top anti-aging treatments. And breathe.

1. LA ZAMBRA HOTEL, SPAIN

What? Fancy new five-star Andalusian retreat on the outskirts of magical MIjas village in the hills of the Costa del Sol. Its Mood La Zambra Spa and Anti-Aging Beauty Centre are big news – a huge wellness space with 12 treatment rooms, pools, sauna, Turkish baths, ice bath, Jacuzzi and gym.

Top treatments? It’s all about mood enhancement here (clue’s in the name) and guests can choose from five ‘wellness journeys’: relax, healing, reconnect, vitalise or glow (we’ll take all five, thanks). The journeys use a mix of holistic, traditional and innovative new treatments, think Auyrvedic massages, Tibetan sound bowl therapy, Anne Semonin facials, Swaywaver (the world’s first floating treatment table), and Indiba radiofrequency treatments, which rejuvenate and tighten the skin – so long double chin, sagging arms and fine lines.

Anything else? Complimentary sunrise yoga, Thai chi and body sculpt in the gym or gardens.

2. CLARIDGES, LONDON

What? The capital’s legendary hotel is even more glamorous thanks to the opening of its first dedicated spa space. Three floors below bustling street level you’ll step into a zen-like world of Japanese-inspired curved wood walls, polished stone and calming pastels, housing a large pool, steam room, sauna and gym.

Top treatments? This is the place to come for treatments from London’s wellbeing superstars; Josh Wood salon (there are only a couple of chairs so it’s super exclusive), celeb favourite nail technician Harriet Westmoreland, and Ross J Barr, acupuncturist to the stars. You’ll want to book a session with FaceGym to de-puff and tighten (the cryotherapy gets results) and it’s the first London destination spa offering Augustinus Bader facials and body treatments.

Anything else? The 90-minute bamboo and silk ritual signature treatment is SO GOOD – full body massage including a foot ceremony, body and hand massage and a facial. You can’t fail to leave feeling restored and rested.

3. ADLER SPA RESORT SICILIA, SICILY

What? Stunning new environmentally friendly spa resort close to miles of sand and the sparkling Med in the Riserva Torre Salsa National Park. It’s causing a stir in the island’s spa scene thanks to a huge wellness area, three saunas, 13 treatment rooms, Thalasso whirlpool, gym and three pools.

Top treatments? The Thalasso Programme includes an Adler body Thalasso, Hydrodetox treatment with salt, algae pack, customised body massage and a legs massage. The sun treatments are also tempting, including an Adler Facial Sensitive, to hydrate and quench skin. A deep facial cleansing with JetPeel really gets results – you’ll return home glowing.

Anything else? Private beach, garden yoga platform, personal trainers and an eco lido in a secluded bay. Oh and you might spot turtles, birds of prey, tortoises and porcupines during a hike in the national park.

4. SIX SENSES CRANS-MONTANA, SWITZERLAND

What? Six Senses opened a new hotel in Ibiza last year which went down a storm, next month (Feb 1) the luxurious spa hotel chain opens a new place in the Alps that’s promising to mix cutting edge spa technology with ancient treatments and therapies. The design looks very cool, with an indoor pool opening onto a courtyard with trees, rooftop pool, nine treatment rooms, ice fountain and cold plunge pool, all the saunas (Finnish, rock and bio salt), open-air cinema and Alchemy Bar. Intriguing.

Top treatments? It’s all about personalised wellness at Six Senses, so you’ll want to book a screening for non-invasive analysis to measure your key biomarkers – translated from spa speak, that’s an MOT for your body and yes, they will be able to tell if you drink way more than 10 units of wine per week. Then you can try Biohacking, which uses technology to help you look and feel your best through compression therapy, pain relief and tension relief.

Anything else? There’s a separate spa for kids and teenagers, which is genius in Muddy’s opinion.

5. PAVILLON FAUBOURG SAINT-GERMAIN, PARIS

What? Recently revamped Left Bank hotel in a wonderful location between legendary Café de Flore and the River Seine. The vaulted cellar spa with pool and hammam are an unexpected bonus in a city centre bolthole.

Top treatments? Treatments by CODAGE Paris are exceptional. The Rituals are all extremely tempting, particularly the Couture Ritual which includes a body exfoliation and massage to stimulate circulation, remove surface dead skin cells and calm the mind. And Muddy could do with the Boost of Radiance, which ‘erases fatigue and gives your skin back all its vitality.’ That will do nicely.

Anything else? There’s a Shopping Break treatment, a drainage-stimulating leg massage combined with reflexology – only in Paris, non?
