Skip to the flicks! 8 movies hitting the big screen this month

Hotfoot it to the cinema, there’s so much to see this month, including Ben Affleck making accountants look cool (again), Jason Momoa tackling the wacky world of Minecraft and Meghann Fahy on the date from hell.

PICK OF THE MONTH

The Accountant 2 (15), Fri 25 Apr

Don’t let the unoriginality of the title (or the mention of accountants) put you off watching this sterling sequel to the 2016 smash. Ben Affleck (swoon) reprises his role as forensic accountant, Christian Woolf, alongside Jon Bernthal (double swoon) who plays his estranged, lethal weapon of a brother. The pair are forced to reunite when an old acquaintance is murdered, sparking a violent series of events which puts Woolf, and the U.S. Treasury, in the firing line. Cynthia Addai-Robinson, J. K. Simmons, Daniella Pineda and Allison Robertson also star in this twisty, turny, action-packed thriller.

Mr Burton (12A), Fri 4 Apr

A Richard Burton origin story? Pass the popcorn! This remarkable true story charts the famed actor’s early years living in Port Talbot. From his impoverished beginnings to the firm but fair guidance of his teacher Philip Burton (played superbly by Toby Jones) who steered him from wayward schoolboy on to the road to stardom. Industry‘s Harry Lawtey plays Richard, with Lesley Manville, Aneurin Barnard and Aimee-Ffion Edwards supporting. Mr Burton is inspiring, heartwarming and will most definitely make you want to visit Wales – the filming locale is gorgeous.

Death of a Unicorn (15), Fri 4 Apr

Jenna Ortega is showing no signs of stepping away from the spooky roles. In comedy horror, Death of a Unicorn, she teams up with Paul Rudd, Will Poulter, Téa Leoni, Richard E. Grant and Anthony Carrigan, and tries to evade some vengeful unicorns after accidentally hitting and killing one with a car. Yep it’s weird, wacky and totally on the horn (sorry), but there are some funny moments and, let’s be honest, we’re never not happy to see Paul Rudd so a win all round.

A Minecraft Movie (PG), Fri 4 Apr

The beard game is strong with Jason Momoa and Jack Black leading the charge in this ensemble family adventure homage to the Noughties computer game, Minecraft. When a mysterious portal pulls four misfits into a bizarre, cubic wonderland they are forced to embark on a magical quest to get home. Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen and Jennifer Coolidge also star. Throw in Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre‘s Jared Hess at the helm, and Momoa sporting a pink, fringed, leather jacket, and we can’t think of a reason why you shouldn’t watch A Minecraft Movie.

The Amateur (12A), Fri 11 Apr

Vengeance is the name of the game for Rami Malek in this action-packed, spy thriller based on Robert Littell’s 1981 novel, The Amateur. Malek plays a brilliant CIA coder whose world implodes after his wife is killed during a terrorist attack. When his supervisors refuse to take action, his digital intelligence becomes the ultimate weapon on his road to revenge. Rachel Brosnahan, Caitríona Balfe, Jon Bernthal (hello again), Holt McCallany, Julianne Nicholson and Laurence Fishburne also star in this tense nail-biter.

Drop (15), Fri 11 Apr

Horror director, Christopher Landon (Disturbia, Paranormal Activity), is back with a new cinematic Drop, which will certifiably put you off dating for life. Meghann Fahy leads as Violet, a widowed single mother off on her first date in, like, forever, with Henry (a brooding Brendon Sklenar) a photographer she met online. The date is a dream until she receives a mysterious message from an unknown, hooded figure, who threatens to harm her son unless she kills her date. Gasp. And so ensures the date from hell. Mysterious, thrilling, edge-of-your-seat stuff.

The Penguin Lessons (12A), Fri 18 Apr

Fancy something heartwarming? Steve Coogan and his pet penguin should do the trick in this gorgeous film based on true events. Coogan plays Tom, a disillusioned Englishman working as a teacher in Argentina during the Seventies. A life he finds frustrating and unfulfilling until he rescues a penguin from an oil-slicked beach, and ends up (reluctantly) keeping him as a pet. You’ll get all of the warm and fuzzies watching this.

Sinners (15), Fri 18 Apr

What’s better than one dapper dressed Michael B. Jordan? Two dapper dressed Michael B Jordans (of course). Set in the Jim Crow-era South of the 1930’s, Sinners sees him in a dual role, playing twin brothers, Smoke and Stack, who return to their hometown to start over, only to be faced with a terrifying, supernatural evil. Another watch with plenty of peek out from behind your popcorn moments, but, with Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, Omar Benson Miller, Li Jun Li and Jayme Lawson also starring, and Black Panther‘s Ryan Cooglar directing, we’ll endure them.
