Braywood House Estate, Winkfield, Windsor

Braywood House Estate windsor large house holiday rental

Perfect for a right royal knees up, Braywood House Estate is a stonking Victorian vicarage with state-of-the-art luxuries and onsite concierge. The house is just a stone’s throw from Windsor (squint and Kate and Wills are practically neighbours). The eclectic decor will satisfy design mavens – think acid bright details, zebra rugs, and garden chandeliers. Owners James and Rachael pride themselves on their family offering (not suitable for under 2s though) and you can’t argue with 10 acres of forestry and gardens with woodland play area, a zip wire, treehouse, and fire pit for nights round the campfire toasting marshmallows. Plus you’re free to roam the Crown Estate forest (Shhh! Braywood has special permission to do this) – perfect for Royal stalkers, I mean, spotters. In fact, Queen Victoria used to be a regular visitor here and is even said to have organised the planting of the avenue trees that line the driveway. The house has four king sized beds and sleeps 8 esteemed guests with two bathrooms. You can book your stay like a hotel, from two nights or weeks at a time, and it will set you back £550-£600 a night – plus service fees. How about forever? Book here.

OXFORDSHIRE

Ardington House, Wantage

What’s the saying, go big or go home? Well, it doesn’t get much bigger than this Georgian gem in South Oxfordshire. Blending its original 18th-century features with modern interiors, it’s a fabulous hideaway for party and play. The 12 bedrooms sleep up to 25 people, while the dining room seats up to 20 at a squeeze, and the 30-acre grounds house plenty of family-friendly activities. The huge kitchen boasts double Aga and another dining table, which seats up to 16. If you don’t fancy cooking, there’s a cosy pub nearby and plenty of space to accommodate caterers. Plus, there’s a helicopter landing pad on-site if you want to arrive in style.

BUCKINGHAMSHIRE

The Georgian Mansion, Taplow

You don’t have to arrive here on horseback, but you’d fit right in if you did. No stranger to hosting weddings and large events, this pretty pile looks fresh out of an Austen novel and boasts a ballroom for up to 150 guests (which is fully air-conditioned, FYI), plus a dining room for up to 50. There are ten double ensuite bedrooms, which sleep up to 22 and a bridal suite that’ll have you wanting to tie the knot all over again. While you have the whole place to yourself, you can opt for catering from quality services already vetted by the mansion. Oh, and the panelled library makes for stunning photo ops for you Insta-fiends – rumour has it people go in there to read – what a waste!

Slade Farmhouse, Beaconsfield

We can’t think of a better Christmas hideaway than this boutique farmhouse in quaint Beaconsfield. Sleeping 15+, depending on how many you can squeeze into the seven bedrooms, there’s a spacious living area to sprawl out in, furnished with all the creature comforts, including a 43” TV. If that’s not big enough to fit the whole gang, the drawing room is fit for a cosy games night with plush Chesterfield chairs, blankets, and the cherry on top, a rustic fireplace. Whipping up a festive lunch is made easy in the brand new fitted kitchen, but if you can’t muster up the energy, you’re a short drive away from the bumper food offering of the Chilterns.

Observatory House, Bedford

observatory House Bedford

A stunning Georgian blue plaque town house, set 5 mins walk from buzzy Bedford, feels rustic and rural as they come. It used to house the largest observatory in England (hence the name) and is now a popular bolthole for large families and sophisticated hen parties thanks to it’s 6-8 flexible bedroom set up. While the owners live in, it’s large enough that you won’t even notice they’re home and they even have their own separate kitchen so won’t encroach on your holiday. Oh and apart from all the original features did we mention it has a home cinema and swimming pool?! Just mind those stilettos on the 200-year-old wooden floors though!
