Gardener’s House, Hawarden Estate

Just across the border from Cheshire and into North Wales, you’ll find the Hawarden Estate – a vast sprawl of forest and parkland with a trio of boltholes that have been either revived or brought to the estate as part of it’s mammoth regeneration. There’s the just-for-two beekeeper’s hut or for larger families, the three-storey West End sits in an 18th-century castle. Though we’re a little bit in love with the Gardener’s House – a serenely wholesome country pad, with rustic cool interiors and space for between five and nine guests, plus a wood-fired sauna, private orchard and miles upon miles for the kids to run wild. Oh and I’ve not even mentioned the Hawarden Estate’s Farm Shop – dubbed one of the best in Britain by The Times. Five nights from £1,475.
CORNWALL
Carbis Bay, St Ives

Winner of best hotel in the regional and national Muddy Awards 2024, Carbis Bay is right on one of Cornwall’s loveliest Blue Flag beaches, which the half term kids club makes full use of. From beach games, to arts and crafts, film nights, and pizza making, relax in Cornwall’s only Bamford spa, or enjoy a leisurely lunch overlooking the waves. It’s only a short walk into arty St Ives, and little ones will love the train that practically takes you door to door.
Bedruthan, Mawgan Porth

On Cornwall’s north coast at celeb hot spot Mawgan Porth bringing Palm Springs vibes and mid-century modern glamour is Bedruthan. Family activities include kids clubs, evening entertainment and family sensory spa garden in the school holidays, a play crèche for guests and access to the soft play, cinema and play room, plus look out for the daily craft sessions and kids crafty parties. The Esplanade Hotel, Newquay

A world of adventure for fun-loving families awaits at The Esplanade Hotel in Newquay, with on-site surf school and easy access to the UK’s most famous surfing beach, where you’ll also find rockpools, sand and waves for days – surfers of all abilities are welcomed and the Quiksilver Surf School, which is a one-stop-shop for board hire, wetsuit hire, individual tuition and classes, is on hand, so you don’t even need to bring a bodyboard. A babysitting service is provided so adults can enjoy live entertainment in the kid-free Elements Cocktail Bar. The whole clan meanwhile can enjoy films in the new cinema room and splash to their hearts content in the swimming pool. Parents wanting a little peace and quiet can also escape to the adults only spa at sister hotel, Fistral Spa, just up the road.

Darwin Forest Lodges, Matlock

Planning a get-together with a few other families over half term or Easter? With amazing walks on the doorstep and beautiful Calke Abbey just up the road, there’s stacks to keep you busy (and the Peak District is within shooting distance for days out too).
DEVON
Best Western The Dartmouth Hotel Golf & Spa, Blackawton

With all the benefits of staying at a hotel and just 10 mins from the picturesque harbour town Dartmouth, here has six hidden gem self-catering cottages families rave about, sleeping up to six. Bovisand Lodge Holiday Park, nr Plymouth

Where beach, back-to-nature and city come together, Bovisands near Plymouth is a 4-star family-run holiday park with a Green Tourism Award. Whether you stay in a Pemberton caravan, a luxury wooden lodge or a heritage apartment, families have loads to do here – from paddling and exploring rock pools, walking on the SW coast path or splashing around in the heated indoor pool. It’s a short walk to the Plymouth ferry for city trips, such as exploring the city’s museum and the largest shark tank in the UK at the National Marine Aquarium.
Compton Pool, Marldon

With the beaches of Torquay nearby, Compton Pool makes a brilliant base for busy families. Covering 14 acres and 10 upmarket cottages, the site has a heated indoor pool, plus a games room and play park, and a field with farmyard animals and alpacas to feed. For family bonding with older kids, you can fish in the on-site lakes or have a knock-about on the tennis court. Owners Paul and Debbie live in the 11th cottage with their six year-old son and a pooch, and are on-hand with local knowledge should you need them.
DORSET
Cliff View Cottage, Lyme Regis

Winners of Best Boutique Stay in Dorset, Somerset & Bristol in the Muddy Awards 2024, Jurassic Properties have five gorgeous places to stay in the jewel of the Jurassic Coast, aka Lyme Regis. A family of four (and up two pooches) will be very happy indeed in comfy, cosy Cliff View Cottage with private garden and parking, situated above the town overlooking Ware Cliffs and the sea. It’s just a 10 min walk from this little haven into the buzzy little town with all its indie shops, cafés and restaurants and sandy beach. Perfick!
Acorn House, Silverlake, nr Dorchester

There’s lots to keep everyone happy at this contemporary pad, sleeping eight in four bedrooms and with an open plan living area, on a private holiday estate with lake and woodland in West Dorset. As well your own hot tub, BBQ and garden, you can use the estate’s outdoor heated pool, water sports facilities, lakeside beach, tennis courts, table tennis, forest playgrounds, spa with sauna and gym – and there’s a roof bar and café. In the unlikely event that you get bored, the iconic Jurassic Coast isn’t far away.
ESSEX
Wakes Hall Lodges, Wakes Colne

Fancy relaxing (as much as you can with kids) in the Essex countryside in a choice of luxury lodges or Grade II listed cottage? Say hello to Wakes Hall Lodges or Crows Hall. If that’s your kind of half term break (yes please) then Toppesfield Vineyard’s the place. Close by the Essex/Suffolk border, its contemporary accommodation sleeps 2 to 4, with 2 bedrooms with en-suites. Downstairs, there’s a bijou (but fully equipped) kitchen, plus large open plan lounge/diner, your own patio, dining table and Jacuzzi. All that plus 300mb broadband, 75” TV with Netflix and Sky Q – and Spotify and Alexa available through Sonos? Sounds like a dream (but it isn’t, obvs).
GLOUCESTERSHIRE
Burleigh Court Hotel, Stroud

HAMPSHIRE
New Park Manor, Brockenhurst, New Forest

New Park Manor in located in the beautiful New Forest National Park, perfect for spotting free-roaming ponies and deer and exploring nature on a woodland stroll. (It’s also just 20 mins drive to Paulton’s Park, home to Peppa Pig World). Renovated in 2024 and striking that tricky balance of being both child and grownup friendly, kids get the run of an outdoor playground, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and can even book a spa treatment. For adults, video monitors for the rooms and two hours’ included daily childcare in ‘The Den’ can help free you up for a relaxed, child-free supper or a spot of blissful adults-only spa time.
Audley’s Wood, Basingstoke

Surrounded by woodlands and full of characterful features, this Gothic Renaissance mansion ticks a lot of boxes for a family-friendly stay. Located just outside of Basingstoke to the North of Hampshire, it’s close to some top family attractions including Basingtoke’s Milestone’s Museum, Jane Austen’s House at Chawton and The Vyne (National Trust). Part of the Hand Picked Hotels group, children under 11 get complimentary bed and breakfast when a sharing parents’ room. Kids get also get a welcome pack, a mini VIP robe to borrow and there’s even bedtime milk and cookies.
ISLE OF WIGHT
Tapnell Farm, West Wight

A short drive from Yarmouth in the pretty West Wight countryside, Tapnell Farm is a fun, family-friendly, back-to-nature glamping break. Spend the day in the brilliant Farm Park with its meerkats, wallabies, creepy crawlies and fun rides, eat at The Cow restaurant, gaze up at the stars in the dark sky then settle down for the night in a cool geo dome, safari tent or log cabin.
HERTFORDSHIRE
Beehives Cottage, Woodhall Estate, Hertford

This luxe country cottage in the heart of Woodhall Park is the perfect rural escape for a family of four. Gorgeously furnished, it feels completely private, while giving families access to the one acre garden and myriad woodland trails and footpaths straight from the doorstep. And if the weather doesn’t play ball, relax with a board game or film in front of the roaring log fire.

This Grade II-listed manor, set in beautiful Herts countryside in Tring, has stylish family accommodation and stacks of activities to keep the kids entertained. From peacock feeding to arts and crafts and outdoor games (axe throwing anyone?) your toddler, tween or teen can make the most of the in-house schedule while you can relax by the pool or enjoy a little R&R at the spa.
KENT
Elmley Nature Reserve, Isle of Sheppey

No need to leave the country for a safari holiday when you have Elmley Nature Reserve waiting in Kent for you! With 3,300 acres at its disposal, Elmley is positioned on the edge of the Isle of Sheppey and is the only family-owned and managed National Nature Reserve in the country where you can stay overnight. Ok so we are not talking lions and tigers and bears (oh my) but you’ll find rare birds, plants, animals and insects all in a stunning landscape. Accommodation includes Kingshill, an 18th Century Farmhouse or the cosy Elmley Cottage. There’s also shepherd huts or glamping bell tents.
Goodnestone House, nr Canterbury

Drrrrrumroll please, for this stunning, privately owned stately home and garden, situated half way between the city of Canterbury and the Kent coastline. You can hire the whole house for that truly special function or weekend with friends. There’s a reason it was a favourite of Jane Austen and the producer of Downton Abbey! Under an hour by train from London, Goodnestone Park sleeps 24 in 12 bedrooms with 11 bathrooms. There’s also (deep breath first) five reception rooms including drawing room, dining room (with seating for 24), library, round painted reception room (ideal for small wedding receptions), first floor sitting room with TV/DVD, hallway (complete with sweeping staircase), huge breakfast room, kitchen, large gardens and grounds extending to 15 acres, extensive terraces and BBQ with ample parking.
The Bull at Brenchley

This wonderfully, quirky Victorian English pub has been converted into fabulous, 5-star luxury self-catering accommodation for up to 16 people in the pretty village of Brenchley (10 mins from Tunbridge Wells). Inside you’ll find 8 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms (6 en suite), lounge with plenty of seating, dining area with a dining table that will seat all 16 guests (pictured) and a well equipped kitchen. But equally if you’d like the owners to organise a catering service for you, so you don’t have to lift a finger, just say the word. And down in the basement is what they call a media room, complete with 65″ curved TV but what we call a cocktail/party den. Bring on the karaoke (because we’re classy like that).

Youngsters can even enjoy a spy day – inspired by tales of Churchill, spies and the MI5 meeting at the hotel during World War II, St Ermin’s has created a mission for kids to crack clues around the hotel. Its location in Westminster is also ideal for sightseeing, including the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace and St James’s Park.
NORFOLK
Happy Valley Venue and Glamping Retreat, Grimston

If a last minute family getaway is what you’re after then look no further than super luxe (and super gorgeous) glamping site Happy Valley. The exclusive venue in North West Norfolk only opens its books 6-8 weeks in advance so there’s still time to book that impromptu half term getaway you’ve been deliberating. Set within nine acres of woodland, there’s glamping, and there’s Happy Valley glamping with the choice of woodland treehouses, shepherds huts and tree temples (plus bell tents when the weather is warmer) to stay in, all completely gorgeous and not shy of creature comforts (hello electricity, cosy beds, waterfall showers and heated indoor loos!). The kids will love the rustic outdoorsy staycay while parents can enjoy a little off-grid action and unplugging from daily life. Winning.
North Norfolk Escapes, North Norfolk

Coastal calm is the name of the game when it comes to North Norfolk Escapes and its three-strong offering of cosy, self-catering cottages, each within spitting distance of the sea. Choose between Creek Cottage in Salthouse (above), a stunning flint fisherman’s cottage overlooking the reed beds; Green Cottage in East Runton enveloped by the most delightful south facing garden; and Beachcomber Cottage in Overstrand which looks like an oversized beachhut with views to die for. There’s even a cool, converted aircraft Hanger within the grounds available for use too, we’re thinking man cave, a peaceful refuge for you or for shutting the kids in when the strop gets too much! Locale wise you are remote enough to really get some distance from life, but not totally cut off with Cley-next-the-Sea on the doorstep for walks and Holt roughly three miles away for a mooch or anything else you might need. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE
Fawsley Hall Hotel & Spa, nr Daventry

This magnificent country house hotel is set in extensive gardens and parkland, so there’s plenty of space to run around in, including an ancient woodland and outdoor tennis courts, as well as an indoor swimming pool. There’s a wide range of accommodation to choose across the main house, stables and Knightley Court, with many of the larger rooms and suites big enough to accommodate families. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE
Honies Farm Barns, nr Newark

With an art gallery and fabulous walks on the doorstep, both on campus and at nearby Wollaton Park, this is a very special place to cosy up in luxury in at the end of the day. OXFORDSHIRE
The Feathers, Woodstock

Woodstock’s historic hotel-cum-pub-restaurant, The Feathers, recently re-opened after a multimillion-pound refurb, and it’s quite the destination. It has 23 spruced up rooms, which include family friendly suites with a king-size bed for the adults and a double sofa bed for the kids (recommended aged 12 and under). With Blenheim Palace on your doorstep, there’s plenty to keep little ones occupied here too – head to Blenheim’s fab adventure playground or explore the estate’s vast parkland. (In Feb half term you can meet some Blenheim sheep). You’ll have earned your lunch after all that fresh air, and The Feathers’ stylish brasserie, The Nest, caters for children for breakfast, lunch and dinner (get them in early at 6pm). If that sounds too formal, then new owner Daniel Ede is cooking up plans for relaxed al fresco fare cooked on the Argentinian BBQ. Pray for sunshine.
The Head of the River, Oxford

Nestled between the River Isis and Christ Church Meadow with gorgeous views on both sides, this historic pub with rooms is the perfect base for an Oxford city break. Its 19 bedrooms had a full refurb last spring, and they’re graded by Cosy, Comfort or Indulgence depending on your budget (all the Indulgent rooms have guaranteed river views). It’s family and dog-friendly here too, so bed down in a family room with a king-size for the grown-ups, bunks/sofa beds for the kids, and dog bedding and water bowls for your four-legged friends if required. Warm and cosy in the winter, thanks to a huge brick hearth with roaring fire, and delightful on warmer days when you can spend a lazy afternoon on the 300-seater outdoor terrace by Folly Bridge, the Head of the River is a boutique hotel for all seasons.
RUTLAND
Lakeside Lodges, Rutland Hall Hotel, Oakham

This idyllic escape at the edge of Rutland Water has 31 self-catering, dog-friendly, timber-framed Lodges nestled beside the lake, each accommodating between two and six guests, making them perfect for a family getaway. There’s a Leisure Club on site, with indoor pool, as well as pitch and putt and a crazy golf course on site plus, of course, plenty of activities to get into at nearby Rutland Water, both in the water and on dry land, from sailing to cycling. Huala Oasis, nr Hambridge

Silent disco anyone? Super colourful and bright, this place has been designed with fun in mind. Little kids will love the outdoor play area with trampoline and toys, outdoor heated pool, indoor slide and ball pit, themed bedrooms and book nook for bedtime stories. Big kids and grown ups will love the beer/prosecco pong table, table footie, hot tub, fire pit, pool house with bar and snug, glam station, silent disco and a movie suite (that doubles up as a bedroom). Sleeping up to 24, it’s ideal for families who like to holiday together – or one (very) big, happy family.
SUFFOLK
Ringshall Grange, Ringshall nr Stowmarket

Escape the madness of soft play and head to the dreamy Ringshall Grange in Suffolk instead. This moated manor house is a fairytale come true – chic, spacious (it sleeps up to 23, no biggie), and kitted out with everything from a karaoke room to a wood-fired pizza oven. The kids can roam free in woodland dens or get lost in the children’s library, while you soak in the hot tub or channel your inner BBQ goddess. Highchairs, cots, and toddler beds? All sorted. Half-term never looked so fabulous.
The Bildeston Crown, Bildeston

Escape the half-term madness and treat the family to a cosy stay at The Bildeston Crown. This 500-year-old gastropub is packed with character – think low beams, roaring fires, and cosy armchairs perfect for a winter warm-up. SUSSEX
Honeybridge Estate, Ashurst

Ring ring, relaxation on an entirely new level is calling on this beautiful estate north of the South Downs. There’s not one, not two, but three incredible properties available to rent individually or collectively all with access to a 14metre indoor heated infinity pool with hot tub, sauna et al. No, you’re not dreaming. Depending on the dates you visit you can see snowdrops and bluebells on the surrounding walks – that’s if you can tear yourself away from the hot tub(s). The first property is the cottage complete with oak beams, an Inglenook fireplace and oodles of natural light. It sleeps up to 10 with two en-suites. If the sun is out there’s a gas BBQ to take advantage of an a table that sits 10 on the terrace. More of a modern kind of gal? The renovated barn sleeps 12 and has an open-plan living space. There’s there’s a treehouse, zip wire, private fishing lake and wealth of activities on offer for kids, yes, of all ages!. For a hat trick, the main house sleeps 18, with an extra slice of luxury. This is the showstopper with grand rooms and gorgeous antique furniture.
Oakwood West Holidays, Bosham

Right in the sweet spot of West Sussex you’re close to the coast (namely the sandy West Witterings beach), in the heart of the South Downs countryside and right by Chichester. Win. These boutique holiday cottages and lodges have stunning interiors, large social spaces as well as their own private gardens each with a hot tub. The cottages are dog friendly, so everyone is invited and there’s plenty of outdoor seating with sofas to enjoy a sundowner on, and outdoor cooking options as well as a log fire indoors to cosy up by. There are four options to choose from sleeping from 2-6 with the option to book multiple properties at once or go all out and hire the entire site that caters for 26. Read review.
Madam Green Farm, Oving

With tennis courts and a pool, this trio of self catering holiday homes tick all the boxes. If you stay here you’re also close to the charm of the Blue Flag beaches and the South Downs. You certainly won’t be bored! These converted Beach Huts are eco friendly (they’ve won an award we’ll have you know) and are available all year sleeping 4 with 2 bedrooms. The interiors are Scandi style with open plan living space and a wood burning stove. If the weather allows, there’s a BBQ area and private garden ideal for those sundowners. Another option all year round is The Pear Store a charming annexe cottage attached to the main Farmhouse (available July-Sept), and this sleeps 4 with 2 bedrooms. The mezzanine twin bedroom with a stair ladder adds some extra character, kids will love this too. From Easter onwards guests can use the pool and tennis lessons are available all year round. Great Fosters, Egham

If you’re craving a dash of Royal elegance with the family, Great Fosters should do just nicely. This Tudor country house hotel is set in 50 acres of gorgeous gardens and grounds just outside Egham, and whether you’re looking for a getaway for two or a family stay, there’s a room (or suite) that’s perfect – and plenty to do for everyone, including those tricky teenagers. The hotel is also perfectly positioned for other local attractions including Thorpe Park, Legoland, Runnymede National Trust, Windsor Great Park and Virginia Water – all less than 20 mins by car.
Foxhills, Ottershaw

For an all-adventure action-packed family getaway, Foxhills Club & Resort near Chertsey in Surrey, has it nailed with something to suit every member of the family. More than 200 activities are on offer at the resort each week – from sporty activities to arts and crafts, and adventure clubs – plus there are three golf courses, 11 tennis courts, five swimming pools and adventure playgrounds. Phew! Lucky there’s also a luxury spa for some much needed R&R. And then there’s The Pavilion, a dedicated family building, which is home to a soft play, role-play high street, a games room, two pools and a football net on the green.

Kington Grange, Claverdon

Big family get-together long overdue? Kington Grange in Claverdon is a complete estate perfect for exploring south Warwickshire. You can rent everything from the one-bedroom loft to the whole damn manor house with all 11 bedrooms! There’s 1.5acres of pretty gardens to walk through, a spring-fed pond perfect for wild swimming and then dip into the hot tub to warm up afterwards. That should keep both you and the kids busy! If your little one is a culture vulture head to Stratford-upon-Avon’s The Arden – just a stone’s throw away from the RSC. There’s a AA Rosette restaurant so catch a matinee and then head back for some top-notch food. You’re right in the centre of town too and there’s always loads on – nearby there’s the Butterfly Farm too or if you venture a little further afield check out Warwick Castle.
WEST MIDLANDS
The Moat House, Acton Trussell

Looking for somewhere for the kids and the dog? Look no further than gorgeous lakeside The Moat House in Acton Trussell – hidden in the rolling Staffordshire countryside. It’s a luxe, indie hotel steeped in history, based in a Grade-II listed building, with beautifully decorated rooms where you can kick back and unwind without a care in the world. It’s the perfect location to head on to Alton Towers too if your kids are thrill-seekers.
Coombe Abbey, Binley

Who said kids have to have all the fun? Head to Coombe Abbey where you can book a luxurious family room. Pack them off to the GoApe course for a bit while you kick back in the glass-covered Garden Room restaurant or one of the drawing rooms and enjoy an afternoon tea. There’s more than 500 acres of landscaped gardens, grounds, lake and woodlands for little ones to scream around in, but just 15 mins away from Coventry city centre which is perfect for exploring.
WILTSHIRE
The Old Bell Hotel, Malmesbury

One of England’s oldest hotels, The Old Bell has character by the bucketload. You’ll find gorgeously eclectic interiors, roaring fires and a menu to suit everyone, from fussy kids through to foodies. In fact, there’s even a dedicated ‘Little Angels’ menu, stuffed with crowd pleasing dishes and sweet treats. For £15, they can have their own afternoon tea, complete with finger sandwiches, choux buns and buttermilk scones (topped with Nutella, of course). If you can tear yourself away from the hotel, Malmesbury Abbey (home to the tomb of King Athelstan, the first king of England) is right next door, while the Avon flows nearby for riverside walks. A short drive takes you to Westonbirt Arboretum, which makes a fabulous spot for kids to burn off steam.
The Farm at Avebury, nr Marlborough

Poised directly opposite ancient Silbury Hill, The Farm at Avebury is about as idyllic as it gets. Owners Rob and Alice have converted the farm’s stable blocks into six units of luxuriant self-catering accommodation, sleeping 23 in total. These are all clustered around the central courtyard, which is beautifully landscaped and dotted with planters. Inside, you’ll find impeccably designed interiors and thoughtful touches, like board games, fresh milk and space to stash muddy wellies and coats. There’s plenty to keep kids busy here, from the outdoor climbing frame to the vast play barn, complete with bouncy castle. Time it right and the chances are you’ll get a farm tour from Alice or Rob, or maybe even a go at feeding the lambs or pigs.
