True Lies, Wed 19 Apr, Disney +
This slick Mr and Mrs Smith-esque spy thriller, based on James Cameron’s 1994 action comedy, makes perfect midweek viewing. After Helen (Ginger Gonzaga) discovers her seemingly ordinary husband (Steve Howey) is actually a spy for a U.S. Intelligence agency, she ditches the mum life to be his partner in (stopping) crime, putting a well needed spark back into their marriage. Saving the world together is all it takes, apparently!
The Diplomat, Thur 20 Apr, Netflix
Keri Russell gives us all the new job nerves in The Diplomat, a darkly comic series from the producers of The West Wing and Homeland. She plays the newly appointed US Ambassador, a job formerly held by her husband, and finds herself navigating a series of colossal crises in both her professional and personal life. Rory Kinnear and Celia Imrie also star as does Rufus Sewell who is excellent as the supportive but scorned spouse.
Dead Ringers, Fri 21 Apr, Prime Video
What’s better than Rachel Weisz? Rachel Weisz twice (of course) which is exactly what you’re going to get in this gender flipped remake of the 1988 cult classic, Dead Ringers. Weisz is superbly sinister as twins Elliott and Beverly Mantle who share everything – lovers, drugs, a face and a disturbing desire for far-out experiments with women’s fertility. Fan of the original? Then you know what’s to come, for those who don’t, keep a cushion handy because this is all kinds of creepy.
Drops of God, Fri 21 Apr, Apple TV
Imagine having to scoff and quaff for your inheritance, doesn’t sound too bad does it? Drops of Gold may make you change your mind. Based on the popular manga series which sees Camille Leger (Fleur Geffrier) inherit the world’s greatest wine collection (worth a cool $148 mill) from her late father. But, of course, there’s a catch, she must compete with her fathers protégé in a series of gruelling gustatory challenges where the winner takes all. As intriguing as it is unsettling, watch with a large glass of wine (we know, any excuse!).
Big Beasts, Fri 21 Apr, Apple TV
Tom Hiddleston (yep, you heard us) narrates this wonderful new docu-series which celebrates all the Big Beasts in nature. This visually stunning 10-parter follows whales, hippos, tigers, bears and other sizeable critters across the globe proving, for those who didn’t know already, that big is beautiful.
Ghosted, Fri 21 Apr, Apple TV
Ana de Armas, Chris Evans, Amy Sedaris and Adrian Brody star in this comic thriller, brought to you by the brains behind Deadpool. It tells the age old story – guy meets girl, guy falls in love with girl only to discover girl is a secret agent (yep, that one). Add some bad guys, explosions, gunslinging and gravity-defying stunts into the mix and you’ve got Ghosted – perfect Friday night viewing.
Malpractice, Sun 23 Apr, ITV
Fresh from the same production company as Line of Duty and Vigil, to say brand new hospital drama Malpractice is tense would be an understatement. When a patient dies unexpectedly on Dr Lucinda Edwards (Niamh Algar) watch, it seems like an open and shut case, at first. As the hunt for blame intensifies, things quickly escalate into a full blown conspiracy and all sorts of secrets start to come out. Nail-biting stuff.
