March to the movies! 8 films coming to cinemas this month
Double the De Niro and 17 Robert Pattinsons – March is bursting at the seams with sweet cinema action.
PICK OF THE MONTH
Mickey 17 (15), Fri 7 Mar
Ever since the smash-hit film Parasite hit our screens in 2019, we’ve been waiting patiently for Oscar-winning director Bong Joon-ho’s next project. Now, after a few delays, we’ll finally be getting Mickey 17 this month. A dark sci-fi comedy, the film stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes who has found himself in the extraordinary circumstance of working for an employer who demands the ultimate commitment to the job: to die for a living. As you do. Toni Collete, Mark Ruffalo and Naomi Ackie also star.
Rule Breakers (PG), Fri 7 Mar
Phoebe Waller-Bridge and some inspiring women defying the odds? Tune us in! Coming out just in time for International Women’s Day (it’s Sat 8 March in case you didn’t know), Rule Breakers tells the incredible true story of the first all-girls robotics team from Afghanistan to compete in a global competition. It follows their rebellious journey from secret coding classes to worldwide innovators, and every man who says they couldn’t along the way, *rolls eyes*. Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker, Bill Guttentag, with Ali Fazal, Nikohl Boosheri and Fahim Fazli making up the cast.
Opus (15), Fri 14 Mar
Last seen navigating the horrors of a fine dining restaurant in The Bear, Ayo Edebiri will appear on the big screen in Opus – a popstar cult chiller, alongside John Malkovich, and Juliette Lewis. Edebiri plays a young journalist chasing the perfect story. She gets invited to a reclusive pop star’s home 30 years after his mysterious disappearance. Surrounded by the star’s cult of sycophants and intoxicated journalists, she finds herself in the middle of his twisted plan. Worth watching from behind a pillow, if necessary.
Black Bag (15), Fri 14 Mar
A Steven Soderbergh spy thriller (he of Ocean’s 11, 12 & 13 fame), penned by Mission: Impossible writer David Koepp, and starring Cate Blanchett, Michael Fassbender, Regé-Jean Page and 007 himself Pierce Brosnan? Sold! If all that wasn’t enough, the premise is like a new spin on Mr and Mrs Smith, with Blanchett and Fassbender playing spy spouses forced to go head to head when one of them is suspected of betraying the nation. Gripping stuff.
Snow White (PG), Fri 21 Mar
Another month, another live-action Disney remake causing a stir. This time it’s Snow White but, it’s written by Greta Gerwig so we’re invested despite the social media storm surrounding casting, CG dwarves, political views (the list goes on). Rachel Zegler plays the fairest of them all while Gal Gadot tackles the Evil Queen, and though Gerwig is sure to have given the script a bit of a #girlpower update (this Snow White doesn’t need a prince to save her), your poisoned apples, woodland creatures and chatty mirrors still all made the cut.
The Alto Knights (15), Fri 21 Mar
The Alto Knights sees Robert De Niro go back to his Goodfellas mob boss roots and we are here for it. In a dual role, he plays competing mobsters, Vito Genovese and Frank Costello. Former besties turned bitter enemies, the film follows their battle to come out on top, one assassination attempt at a time. Debra Messing, Cosmo Jarvis, Kathrine Narducci, and Michael Rispoli also star. Sure it’s violent in places but we’re watching for the 1950s style, The Sopranos vibes and, of course, double the De Niro!
FLOW (U), Fri 21 Mar
Nominated for an Oscar, FLOW tells the story of the unlikely friendship between a cat, a dog, a capybara, and a ring-tailed lemur as they all band together in an epic journey of survival after a mysterious flood, in a boat of course. Think Noah’s Ark but without Noah. Brought to you by creative genius, Gints Zilbalodis, who has used some new fandangled way to animate. It’s visually stunning and truly a treat to behold.
Novocaine (15), Fri 28 mar
Prefer your action-packed movies with a side of humour? Check out Novocaine which sees Jack Quaid’s everyman, Nathan Caine (yep, they went there), forced to put his weird, superhuman ability to feel no pain to good use when his bank teller girlfriend gets kidnapped during a robbery. Expect some amusing fight sequences, torture scenes and lots of wince-inducing incidents as our hapless hero tries to save the day. Loads of fun, if a bit silly.
