Yep, more than 20 years after Bridget Jones’s Diary was first released, the fourth movie in the series has been announced and we’re buzzing.

Based on the worldwide best-selling book by Helen Fielding back in 1996 (that long ago, really?), the movie, Bridget Jones’s Diary, starring loveable, scatty heroine Renée Zellweger (Bridget), Colin Firth (Mark Darcy) and Hugh Grant (Daniel Cleaver) was a smash hit in 2001. Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason was its less glittering sequel in 2004, but director Sharon Maguire pulled it back with Bridget Jones’s Baby.

Now, nearly a decade after the last release, filming has officially started in London on Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy and we’ve had our ear to the ground to get you all the goss so far!

It’s been eight years since the last film, so here’s a quick summary. We left Bridget at the end of Bridget Jones’s Baby happily married to Mark Darcy and raising their son. A smug married? Surely not!

Daniel Cleaver, Bridget’s on-off love interest, didn’t appear in the third film, though Bridget did attend a memorial service after he was presumed dead following a plane crash. A teaser at the end of the film implied he’d been found alive. Major plot twist.

Are all the original cast onboard?

Great news BJD fans, Renée Zellweger and Hugh Grant are reprising their roles, so we can expect the usual Bridget/Daniel heat. No sign of Colin Firth on the cast list, but really who cares when LEO WOODALL is a co-star?

Yes you read that right, the easy on the eye One Day and The White Lotus actor will be appearing, which is extremely pleasing indeed. Emma Thompson (who starred in the third film as despairing obstetrician Dr Rawlings), Sally Phillips (one of Bridget’s original gang of friends), Jim Broadbent (who plays her dad) and Isla Fisher have also been confirmed.

So what’s the plot?

Weeeelll, it sounds loosely based on the 2013 book of the same title by Helen Fielding, and also rather saucy. Following the death of Mark Darcy (Colin Firth, sob), Bridget’s now a single 50something, raising two kids and entering her cougar, online dating era, which sees her hook up with a man 28 years her junior – step forward and take a bow, Leo.

And if Bridget’s old flame Daniel Cleaver didn’t really die in a plane crash, as implied at the end of Bridget Jones’ Baby, we think it’s safe to say there’ll be another love triangle to keep us entertained.

Or should that be a love square? Eagle-eyed fans spotted the cast filming in London last month and Bridget (with TWO kids by her side), appeared to be flirting with Mr Walker, aka actor Chiwetel Ejiofor. Blimey.

When can I see it?

Not for a while. Pre-production started in April with filming currently taking place in London and continuing over the summer, and a final release date of 14 February, 2025 (Valentine’s Day!) in the US, though there hasn’t been a confirmed date in the UK yet.
