In a brand new production of Verdi’s much-loved romantic drama&nbsp;<a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.roh.org.uk/tickets-and-events/aida-by-robert-carsen-details/?utm_source=muddystilettos&amp;utm_medium=website&amp;utm_campaign=partnership&amp;utm_content=arts&amp;cultureguide" target="_blank">Aida</a>, director Robert Carsen places the story of doomed lovers and battling nations in a modern day, totalitarian state. The libretto centres on Princess Aida, kidnapped during a war between Egypt and Ethiopia. She falls in love with the general Radames, who also has feelings for her – cue 3hrs 15mins of sweet jeopardy and jaw-dropping visual theatre. If you can&#8217;t make this first chance to see the production, don&#8217;t worry &#8211; Grammy-award winning opera star Angel Blue takes the title role from 5 May 2023. Sex! Drugs! Psychosis! So, you know, just your average ballet. The Royal Ballet’s revival of Kenneth MacMillan’s lauded 1978 production returns to the Royal Opera House this autumn; an historical rendering of the true-story murder-suicide scandal that surrounded Crown Prince Rudolf and his mistress Mary Vetsera in the Austro-Hungarian court in the 1880s. Set to exquisite music by Liszt, expect 2 hours brimful of drama, tension and clever storytelling. It’s 14+ only, which will give it extra credibility with your teens.

A star-studded production of Puccini’s passionate, heartbreaking opera, set in 1900s Paris, kicks off next month. There are multiple casts including the likes of American soprano Ailyn Pérez as seamstress Mimì,&nbsp;Peruvian tenor&nbsp;Juan Diego Flórez and British-Italian rising star Freddie De Tommaso as her penniless lover, the writer Rodolfo, and Danielle de Niese as the spirited Musetta, so whichever night you book for you&#8217;re guaranteed to see first-class performances. It’s a relatively short performance time at 2 hours 35 mins, so it’s a great introduction to opera for those who haven’t been before – plus it’s pulsing with worl-famous arias such as Rodolfo’s touching aria Che gelida manina (&#8216;How cold your little hand is&#8217;). Early adopters take note &#8211; it’s world premiere time. Acclaimed Canadian choreographer and director Crystal Pite has taken her 2017 Olivier-Award winning work Flight Pattern and developed it into a full-length ballet for the Royal Opera House, taking as its powerful theme the unfolding global refugee crisis. The original work took the first movement of the achingly beautiful ‘Symphony of Sorrowful Songs’ by Górecki. This new work extends to the entire symphony, so it promises to be a poignant and emotional evening of theatre.

Sometimes only escapism will do. Handel’s&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opera_seria">opera seria</a> Alcina, which had its world premiere in Covent Garden waaaay back in 1735, takes in enchanted castles, flying horses, speaking bushes, sorceresses and evil spirits – so if you’re looking to take yourself to a different realm you’re in the right place. When handsome knight Ruggiero falls under the magic spell of the seductress Alcina, his fiancée Bradamante disguises herself as a man and travels to the island to free him. 



American-Cuban coloratura Lisette Oropesa takes the title role, with award-winning Canadian mezzo Emily D&#8217;Angelo as Bradamante (she’s a total&nbsp;doppelgänger for Margot Robbie – seriously, <a href="https://www.emilydangelo.com/about">check her out</a>!). Handel composed this opera to allow for several dance interludes so it’s going to be a visual as well as magical feast. Sung in Italian with English surtitles.
