Slap-bang in the hustle and bustle of the Strand and situated directly opposite The Lyceum Theatre, One Aldwych is hard to miss. This three-sided Edwardian building (once the HQ of The Morning Post newspaper) is home to 102 rooms and suites that work perfectly for a romantic city break, theatre or foodie jaunt or a family trip to take in the touristy hotspots.

In between jetting around the city, put your feet up in a light-filled Art Deco-styled bedroom or suite, where mod cons include walk-in rainforest showers, Isle of Skye yarns, Mitchell & Peach bath products, English oak floors, Italian bed linen, feather and down duvets, Dyson hairdryer, mist-free mirrors in each bathroom and fresh flowers delivered daily. There are connecting rooms if you’re visiting with the family and want to stick kids in their own space, and many of the rooms are now dog-friendly.

If you are bringing littlies along, make sure you take them to the incredible Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-themed afternoon tea, that serves up swudge milkshake (mixed by waterfall, naturally), scones with snozzberry jam, and savoury snacks all washed down with fizzy lifting Champagne.

For slightly less whimsical fare, you can head to one of the two restaurants for a pre-show dinner. Indigo, headed up by Executive Chef Dominic Teague, dishes up classic British cuisine with a twist – absolutely everything is gluten- and dairy-free but you’d never know it. Meanwhile, Eneko Basque Kitchen & Bar is led by Eneko Atxa, the brains behind three Michelin-starred restaurant Azurmendi in Bilbao. Offerings here are bursting with Northern Spanish flavours, and range from tantalising small plates to a full tasting menu with optional wine pairings. It reopens in March, Covid permitting.

Not enough for you? OK well, another massive plus for One Aldwych is its pool and spa, too – an stunning 18-metre subterranean swimming pool, sauna and steam room. Treat your weary body to a OSKIA or Natura Bissé spa treatment, or work off the sins of the night before in the state-of-the-art 24 hour gym, which comes complete with Peloton bikes.
