<p>Private education has always been a hefty line on the family spreadsheet – but new analysis suggests it’s about to become eyewateringly more expensive. According to Weatherbys Private Bank, the parents of a child leaving school this year after A-levels will have paid an average of&nbsp;£204,622&nbsp;in fees, or&nbsp;£413,471&nbsp;if they boarded. For pupils starting reception this September, that figure could rise to&nbsp;£377,000&nbsp;– and a jaw-dropping&nbsp;£763,000&nbsp;for boarders – thanks to a double whammy of inflation and the looming introduction of VAT on fees. </p>



<p>With that kind of investment, it’s no wonder parents are asking the golden question: how do I know if I’m getting real value for money? We spoke to education consultant Sioban O’Connor, founding partner at <a href="https://education.debretts.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Debrett’s Educatio</a><a href="https://debretts.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">n</a>, who has helped hundreds of families find the right school for their child – and she’s refreshingly frank about what’s worth paying for, what’s not, and how to see beyond the glossy prospectus.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-it-s-not-just-about-the-fees-it-s-what-s-included">It’s not just about the fees, it’s what’s included</h3>



<p>A lower-looking termly fee can be a wolf in cashmere clothing if the reality is a steady drip of extra charges. Sioban says she’s seen schools where parents pay separately for everything – lunches, trips, even the majority of after-school activities – while others roll it all into one reassuringly hefty bill. The trick? Get forensic before you sign. What looks like a “cheaper” school on paper might end up costing more if every trip to the theatre or hockey fixture is billed separately. Nobody enjoys the surprise of a&nbsp;<em>third</em>&nbsp;invoice just when you’ve recovered from the last one.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-you-get-your-evenings-back">You get your evenings back</h3>



<p>Some of the best value-add isn’t in pounds and pence at all. In certain schools, wrap-around care and extracurriculars are part of the timetable, meaning your cherub can eat, do homework, play tennis, bash out a sonata and star in a one-act play before they’ve even left the gates. That’s hours of family time saved – and considerably fewer evenings spent driving laps of the ring road while inhaling a lukewarm coffee. As Sioban says, the built-in extras can be worth their weight in calm, chaos-free weeknights.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-small-classes-and-teachers-who-really-know-your-child">Small classes and teachers who really know your child</h3>



<p>One of the clearest indicators of value is how many pupils a teacher’s keeping an eye on. In the independent sector, smaller classes mean more one-to-one time and personalised teaching. Many staff are serial multi-taskers – the history teacher might also run the rugby team, direct the school play and man breakfast club – which means they see pupils in different settings, not just behind a desk. That all-round visibility can unearth talents (or struggles) you’d never pick up from a homework diary alone.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-right-fit-beats-the-top-100-every-time">The right fit beats the &#8216;Top 100&#8217; every time</h3>



<p>League tables are seductive, but the school in the number one spot isn’t necessarily the holy grail for your child. Sioban’s advice? Think fit, not just flash. An A at a smaller, less selective school is still an A – but in the right environment, your child might achieve it with confidence rather than on the back of relentless tutoring. Force them into a school where they’re permanently at the bottom of the class and you may be paying for years of high-stakes, high-stress firefighting. The right choice is the one where they’ll flourish without losing their sparkle.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-be-realistic-about-bursaries-and-scholarships">Be realistic about bursaries and scholarships</h3>



<p>Bursaries can be genuinely life-changing – Sioban tells of one boy who nearly walked out of a scholarship week after being teased, only to be persuaded to stick it out, support another child and ultimately win an 80% bursary. He went on to become head boy, board at the school and thrive in every sense. But here’s the reality check: bursaries are means-tested down to your last bank statement and the school needs to want&nbsp;<em>your</em>&nbsp;child for their talents, character or potential. Scholarships may win kudos but the financial reduction can be modest, and they come with commitments – think representing the school on stage, pitch or in the concert hall whether you fancy it or not.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-think-location-you-might-more-bang-for-your-buck">Think location – you might more bang for your buck</h3>



<p>London day school fees can make your eyes water, but boarding a little further afield might cost the same and come with more space, more facilities and more breathing room. Since COVID, many families have upped sticks to the edges of the commuter belt and found they can get far more for the same money. Sioban’s not advocating boarding for all, but she does urge parents to think creatively. Get clear on your budget, decide what really matters – academics, sport, creative arts, pastoral care – and choose a school that ticks those boxes without nuking your bank balance.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pastoral-care-is-part-of-the-package">Pastoral care is part of the package</h3>



<p>The true value of a school isn’t just measured in exam results or shiny new sports halls. In many independents, pastoral care is woven into the timetable and culture. Teachers know children from the classroom, the sports pitch and the stage, which builds trust and means they can champion them from multiple angles. Schools that celebrate a mix of talents – academic, artistic, sporty, quirky – tend to produce confident, resilient young people ready for the real world. And if they leave able to both quote Shakespeare and change a tyre, so much the better.</p>



<p>Bottom line?&nbsp;Value for money isn’t just about the figure on the invoice – it’s about the education, opportunities, support and sheer joy your child gains along the way. Ask awkward questions, know your non-negotiables, and pick the school where your child will thrive, not just survive.</p>
