By January, the shine of a new school year can wear thin, and those niggling worries bubble back up. If your child has spent the autumn overwhelmed, unhappy, or quietly sinking under classroom demands, the ripple effect at home is&nbsp;real. No wonder so many parents start scouting for alternatives when the traditional set-up just isn’t landing – whether that’s down to pace, pressure, social noise, anxiety, medical needs, or simply a timetable that refuses to flex for real life (or for kids who spend half their week training, performing or jetting to auditions).

We spoke to three parents who realised something had to change – and discovered that shifting to online school didn’t just transform learning, it reshaped family life too.

Lockdown revealed Emily needed more support

Lockdown changed a lot for our family, especially our view of school. Emily was in Y6 and, as a teacher myself, I thought I had a solid sense of how she was doing – until I saw her work every day at home. What I’d been told and what I could actually see didn’t line up. Trying to teach her myself wasn’t successful, so one evening I started looking for alternatives and found King’s InterHigh. Emily was open to trying it; she hadn’t been happy at school for a while, and in lockdown it didn’t feel like a huge leap. The difference was immediate: teachers who helped her believe she&nbsp;could&nbsp;do things, a pace that suited her, and a growing sense of confidence. By the end of the year it was clear she should stay.



She went on to achieve a full set of A*s at GCSE – remarkable given the earlier messages from her mainstream school about her reading, spelling and maths. I always knew she had more in her; she just needed the right environment. After GCSEs she was offered a scholarship at an independent school, plus a place at a grammar school, but she chose our local sixth form college. She settled back into school life easily, made friends quickly and her lecturers have already commented on her independence and willingness to ask questions.



My son Matthew’s journey has been different but no less telling. After we moved to Wales he tried the local school but found it wasn’t the right environment. He missed the calm and structure of King’s InterHigh, chose to return, and is much happier there. He enjoys the organisation, the quieter pace and is very proud to be on the school council.



For us, King’s InterHigh has offered the best of both worlds: academic support and confidence-building at home, and then the freedom for both children to return to school life when they felt ready. I hope our experience reassures other parents that online schooling doesn’t have to be a permanent shift — it can simply be the right choice for the right moment, with a smooth path back to mainstream education whenever the time is right.

My son Aaron is an alpine ski racer – he’s been on the slopes since he was four, started racing at eight, and now trains and competes across Europe. It’s a huge part of who he is. But when he was at an independent school, it became obvious they couldn’t support the demands of his sport. He was racing for them and winning medals, yet there was little flexibility, minimal guidance, and no real plan for how to balance schoolwork with training. We’d seen too many young athletes give up their sport because GCSEs or A-levels became impossible to juggle, and we knew we couldn’t let that happen to him.



I researched every online school I could find, and King’s InterHigh immediately stood out: clear structure, flexibility, strong communication, a supportive parent forum, and an ethos that education should work alongside a child’s ambitions rather than limit them. That was the deciding factor.



Four years on, it has completely transformed our family routine. Aaron can fit lessons around training, catch up with recordings after long days on the mountain, and we finally have proper visibility of his progress via the parent portal. Socially he’s doing well too – he has a strong network of friends across Europe through both skiing and King’s InterHigh.



Our daughter, meanwhile, is thriving in her mainstream independent school, which just underlines that different children need different environments. The only drawback is that King’s InterHigh doesn’t offer PE GCSE, which Aaron would love, but it’s a small compromise compared with everything he’s gained.

Neurodiverse and needing a school helps Elsa thrive

My daughter Elsa is 16, and we’re now in our fifth year with King’s InterHigh. We joined in 2021 after an extremely tough time. Elsa has a rare genetic condition, physical disabilities and SEND needs. She’d thrived in a small Prep, but the move to a large high school was overwhelming. The promised support didn’t appear, and she was being badly bullied.



Elsa is autistic and masks well, so what we saw was a quiet, withdrawn child. It was her friends who urged her to tell us the truth. I’ll never forget the afternoon she got into the car and finally broke down. Things worsened again the next day, and that evening I de-registered her.



Removing your child from school is frightening – suddenly everything rests on you. But King’s InterHigh quickly changed that sense of isolation. Within a day I’d been welcomed into a parents’ WhatsApp group, which led to a wider community of more than 80 groups. That support became a lifeline.



A lovely example came at prom. The Y11 parents organised one so the students wouldn’t miss out. Elsa didn’t think she could face it, but after gentle encouragement from families we’d known online for years, she went – quietly, in her own way – and managed it.



Learning from home has allowed her to stay in education while managing disability and chronic fatigue. She can rest between lessons, catch up with recordings when needed and stay connected without the pressure of a busy classroom. She’s now studying A levels in History, Classical Civilisations and Politics, working on her EPQ, and writing for the school newspaper.



My son Oscar, with similar medical needs, is thriving in mainstream so it really is about thinking about each child individually. If you’re feeling unsure or overwhelmed, my advice is to speak to parents and explore King’s InterHigh for yourself. Our only regret is not moving Elsa sooner.
