Retro homeware must-haves
Bright colours, bold shapes — the unapologetically brash 80s are back, baby, at least in the world of interiors. Give your home a stylishly retro revamp with these statement pieces.
Removeable Tray Top Side Table
With a glossy paint finish, this side table has a removable tray top (for offering around cocktail sausages, naturally), and makes for a more subtle, stylish choice.
Bobble Coat Rack
It was all primary colours and out-there shapes in the 80s, so this kooky coat rack from Central Living in Oxford is the perfect addition to your retro-chic home. Just add an oversized fur coat or power-shoulder blazer.
Memphis Coffee Table Book
The Memphis Group had a huge impact on 80s design and this cool coffee table book about its influence on interiors and culture, written by a founder-member, is a statement piece itself with its cool cover design. (P.S. if you want to see some of the pieces first-hand, there’s an exhibition running at MK Gallery, in Milton Keynes, until Sept).
Now that’s a candlestick. Made of steel and standing at half a metre tall, these bad boys are a dead cert for creating a talking point in any room.
Bon Ton Pendant Lamp
A stylish light to hang above a table or centre a sitting room, in textbook 80s pink. Muddy loves.
Multicolour Abstract Painting
A bit of abstract art is a given, and we like this hand-painted, unique one from Folk Interiors. Don’t be afraid to go bold with your placement: colour clashing and print-mixing can be a total look.
This eccentric chair promises, wait for it – ‘unparalleled comfort’ – despite all appearances. In fact, you can sit in it in a variety of ways: forward with feet on the ground, sideways with legs placed on the armrests or, erm, upside-down… keeps things interesting, eh?
Bubbles & Bottles Carafes
Brighten up your drinks cabinet with these tinted glass bottles, complete with kooky spherical stoppers. Care for a Blue Lagoon?
Alessi Bird Kettle
This iconic kettle design first appeared in 1985, quickly becoming a staple for any style-respecting kitchen. It’s still an absolute classic today, and now also comes in a model with a tiny dinosaur, if the bird doesn’t do it for you.
A tribute to The Memphis Group, this ribbed, colourful stool brings a fun pop of neon colour to a room. Reaching for your sunglasses? It also comes in more subtle pink, black, purple and peach.
