Best wines to buy for Christmas 2020

From the perfect red to pair with mince pies to the best bubbles for your NYE celebrations, these are the bottles to pick up for the festive season.

Christmas wine

Never know which wines are best to crack out at Christmas time? Or just looking for a change from your usual festive tipple? Luckily, wine doyenne Lynne Levin has picked out the perfect bottle for every special day across the holiday season – read on to find out what to buy when, and how to get free shipping (plus an exclusive discount on all six bottles!).

Thanksgiving celebrations

2015 ROCO The Stalker Pinot Noir, Oregon, USA

Even if you don’t usually celebrate Thanksgiving, we’re looking for any excuse to kick off proceedings in late November – and what better way than with an American wine? Lynne recommends this beautifully crafted Pinot Noir from Oregon’s Rollins Soles of ROCO Wines. Whether paired with turkey and all the trimmings or just dessert, the notes of plum jam and cherry pie will leave you smacking your lips.

2015 ROCO The Stalker Pinot Noir, Oregon, USA (£59 per bottle)

Putting up the tree

2016 Le Vin de LEVIN Gamay, Loire Valley, France

Ring in the season with sweet treats, carols and this delicious organic vegan French Gamay. It’s silky and savoury, and the mixed spice and cherry notes pair perfectly with an extra fruity mince pie (or three).

2016 Le Vin de LEVIN Gamay, Loire Valley, France (£12.80 per bottle)

Christmas Day

Mr L Sauvignon Blanc and Madame L Gamay

This pair make a wonderful match for all Christmas food, whether you’re opting for turkey with chestnut stuffing, glazed baked gammon, Christmas goose with sprouts, or just polishing off the last of the pigs in blankets. The 2012 Mr L Sauvignon Blanc is a French oak-matured, picture white burgundy, while his dishy partner 2011 Madame L Gamay is luscious, silky, and packed with notes of forest berry and star anise. Both set off the Christmas table to perfection.

2012 Mr L Sauvignon Blanc, Loire Valley, France (£31.50 per bottle)
2011 Madame L Gamay, Loire Valley France (£29.50 per bottle)

Boxing Day

Valderiz Crianza, Ribera del Duero, Spain

Cosy up with a big sigh of relief, stick a classic movie on the box and pour a glass of Tempranillo to relax with. This certified organic Valderiz Crianza from Ribera del Duero oozes dark fruit, spices and smoky flavours – ideal for grazing on leftovers throughout the evening.

2014 Valderiz Crianza, Ribera del Duero, Spain (£23 per bottle)

New Year’s Eve

Voyager Estate Sparkling Chenin Blanc

2021 starts so much earlier in Western Australia (open the bubbles at 4pm GMT!) when you start with the superb Voyager Estate Sparkling Chenin Blanc. Grown in the Margaret River region near Perth and made with the traditional méthode champenoise, this fizz is refined, elegant, and complex – just like yours truly.

2018 Voyager Estate Sparkling Chenin Blanc (£28.50 per bottle)
