<p>This ’80s classic is a brilliant example of how easily the 4:2:1 sour can be tweaked to create a whole new drink. If you don’t have crème de mûre, it also works with cassis or Campari. Based on a recipe by Dick Bradsell, one of the godfathers of modern bartending.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Ingredients</h3>



<ul><li>50ml gin</li><li>25ml lemon juice</li><li>10ml sugar syrup</li><li>10ml blackberry liqueur (crème de mûre)</li><li>To garnish: lemon slice</li></ul>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Method</h3>



<p>Shake the first three ingredients with ice and strain into a glass filled with crushed ice. Drizzle the blackberry liqueur over the top so it bleeds into the drink.</p>

<p>One evening last summer, I was working in my study when the scent of sun-warmed fig leaves came drifting in through the window. I sat there inhaling its fruity/leafy/coconutty perfume and wondered if it might work with whiskey. I went outside, picked some leaves and this was the result. Good in a Rum Old Fashioned, too.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Ingredients</h3>



<ul><li>50ml bourbon/rye whiskey</li><li>5ml sugar syrup</li><li>2 dashes orange bitters</li><li>1 hand-sized fig leaf, roughly torn</li><li>To garnish: baby fig leaf/fig slice/lemon or orange twist</li></ul>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Method</h3>



<p>Combine the whiskey and sugar syrup in a mixing glass, add the torn-up fig leaf and leave to infuse for half an hour. Strain into an ice-filled rocks glass, add the bitters and stir as normal.</p>
