Designer vs dead ringer: the leather edit
Leather is top of the trends this season but the real deal can be a *leetle* unfriendly when it comes to your credit card. Cue our edit of the best dupes for the hottest designer pieces.
Warmer than a shirt but more lightweight than a jacket, the ‘shacket’ is perfect for transitioning into autumn (layer up with turtlenecks and wooly jumpers as temperatures hit the smaller digits). From chic Parisian brand FRAME at Net-A-Porter, this burnt orange option is the perfect shade for the season, although super-soft camel leather doesn’t come cheap at £1,310. For a more purse-friendly option try this dead ringer from Topshop with matching tortoiseshell buttons and tie waist (£49).
Remember that episode of Friends when everyone made fun of Ross for wearing leather trousers? Well it turns out he was on to something (apart from when he got stuck and had to wriggle free with talc) as they’re a sartorial must for A/W. Go premium with this & Other Stories pair with subtle kick-flare (£265) or these H&M imitation leather dupes are a steal at £29.99.
You can’t mention leather without referencing the biker jacket. A wardrobe staple they go with pretty much anything from simple jeans and a tee, to adding a rock chick edge to a floral midi (we’re loving this autumnal print from Next). All Saints are the holy grail and the iconic Balfern Biker, at £318, is well worth the investment (seriously, this baby will last for years). However, if you’re not ready to splash the cash, this £139.99 option from Mango is a cool alternative with dropped shoulders and decorative zips, plus it’s also made from the real deal which is a bonus.
Still sexy, but with a more feminine silhouette, a midi skirt is a great alternative to trousers for a statement leather piece in your wardrobe. Available from Harvey Nichols, we love this A.L.C butter-soft chocolate pencil skirt, for £415, from NYC designer Andrea Lieberman (fun fact: she styled JLo in the iconic green Versace dress for the 2000 Grammy Awards). Or on the high street, this pocketed number from M&S comes in at a very reasonable £35.
The Matrix is back, baby! Long leather trench coats are one of the top trends this season and if you’re got a spare £5,340 you can get your hands on this classic-cut Alexander McQueen coat with trad shoulder epaulets and a gun flap. Alternatively, if you don’t fancy forking out the price of a small car on outerwear (we can all dream though, right?) pick up this sleek double-breasted style from Zara (£95.99).
Understated and chic, this shirt dress style is a super-easy way to nail the leather trend with minimal effort – we’ll be wearing ours with thick tights and chunky boots. Splurge on 100% leather with this button down mini from cult French brand MAJE at £479 (oh la la) or save with this tie-up dupe from Miss Selfridge (£39).
