Lichfield’s got all the charm of a market town with the buzz of somewhere twice its size – indie cafés, open-air theatre, family festivals and a thriving creative scene. The events calendar’s lively too, from the week-long Lichfield Festival to the Proms in Beacon Park (think picnic blankets and plenty of fizz). Pop to nearby Kings Bromley or Whittington for a dose of village calm – but fair warning: it’s the kind of place where a quick coffee run easily turns into an all-afternoon affair.</p>

<p>Lichfield’s dining scene is quietly smashing it. Top of the food chain (literally) is <a href="https://www.upstairs.restaurant/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Upstairs</a> by Tom Shepherd  – the city’s first Michelin-starred spot and <em>the</em> place to book if you’re planning something special. Expect knockout modern British tasting menus with serious finesse… just don’t expect to get a table without a waitlist.&nbsp;Just outside the city, <a href="https://theboat.restaurant/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Boat</a> is another heavyweight, with chef Liam Dillon (ex-Noma, no less) serving up beautifully crafted dishes in a relaxed, elegant setting. </p>



<p>For brunch, <a href="https://poms.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pom’s Kitchen &amp; Deli </a>is the regulars’ fave – all colourful plates, great coffee and a menu that covers everything from full Englishes to loaded pancakes. Looking for punchy flavour on a more casual budget? <a href="https://www.junglestreetkitchen.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jungle Street Kitchen </a>is a hidden gem with bold street food – we’re talking katsu, loaded fries and bao buns at brilliant prices.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For dinner with a view, <a href="https://www.egorestaurants.co.uk/restaurant-lichfield/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ego</a> overlooks the tranquil Minster Pool with Lichfield Cathedral doing its majestic thing in the background, making it a dreamy spot for sunset spritzes and Mediterranean plates. If you’re after something more low-key, <a href="https://quillandscholarlichfield.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Quill &amp; Scholar </a>is a smart, buzzy gastropub with a modern menu, good wine list and the kind of cosy vibe that works just as well for date night as it does for Sunday lunch.&nbsp;</p>

<p>You’ve got two train stations:  Lichfield City for local stops and Lichfield Trent Valley for speedy West Coast Main Line services. It’s around 1 hr 18 mins to London Euston, or 40 mins to Birmingham New Street – ideal for hybrid workers. Road-wise, the A38 and A5 are nearby, giving easy access to Birmingham, Stafford, and beyond.&nbsp;</p>
