Staying indoors? Here’s what to watch this week

Bored of boxsets? I hear ya loud and clear lady! Here’s our latest round up of what’s new for TV, film, theatre and music to keep you entertained this week.

MUSIC

The Royal Albert Hall are continuing to stream live music sessions for free as part of their #RoyalAlbertHome programme. This week, you can catch Martha Wainwright on 24 June at 7.30pm, where she’ll be performing new single Wolves with brother Rufus, and LA-based singer-songwriter Bedouine on 25 June at 7.30pm. Top tip – enter your email for a handy notification before the show goes live.

Did you know that Oxford’s finest Radiohead stream a live show from their archives every Thursday at 10pm? Now you do! Pop onto their YouTube channel to watch this week’s show here.

TV

Is it me or are we living through a golden age of documentaries at the moment? Eight Minutes and Forty-Six Seconds, on new channel Sky Documentaries, takes a deep-dive into the killing of George Floyd, which sparked global outcry and a pivotal moment for Black Lives Matters. Never has delving beneath the headlines been more crucial.

If that whets your documentary whistle, head over to Netflix on 24 June when their original film Athlete A goes live. The show digs into USA Gymnastic’s sexual abuse scandal at the hands of team doctor, Larry Nassar – the subject matter is shocking, but you’ll be glued to the screen.

Strawberry shortcake chicken wings, anyone? Er, yum. Don’t expect weeknight dinner tips if you tune in to madcap cooking competition Crazy Delicious on Netflix on 24 June – instead, think GBBO meets the psychedelic edible world of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, judged by Heston Blumenthal,  Carla Hall and Niklas Ekstedt.

Prepare the glitter face paint and clove cigarettes – we may be missing Glastonubury this year, but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate at home with the BBC’s excellent coverage. There’s a whole line-up to choose from, kicking off on Friday with documentary The Glastonbury Experience Live on BBC Two (Fri 26 June, 8.30pm), which looks back at the last 50 years of the festival and re-lives the most memorable performances. That’s followed by a full showing of Beyoncé’s headline performance at the Pyramid Stage in 2011, starting at 10pm, before finishing off with The Best of Glastonbury 2019 at 11.30pm.

Head over to BBC Four to catch their three-parter Glastonbury Backstage Acoustics, which gives you a sneak peek of backstage footage and unseen performances, and then happily flick back and forth between BBC Four and BBC Two to catch sets from Adele, The Chemical Brothers, Amy Winehouse, David Bowie and more.

FILM

Fair warning – Harry Potter, this ain’t. Daniel Radcliffe stars in mega-gory action comedy Guns Akimbo over on Amazon Prime on Sat 27 June, in an alternative future where murderous weirdos fight to the death while the rest of us watch. Funnier than it sounds, but not for the weak-stomached.

This week over on Curzon Home Cinema, they’re celebrating Edinburgh International Film Festival (the world’s longest-running continual film festival, doncha know) with a digital collection that’s available from 24 June-5 July.

Meanwhile, we’ll be settling down with the popcorn to watch World War Two flick Resistance, which stars Jesse Eisenberg as famous mime artist Marcel Marceau. Based on a true story, it explores how he helped rescue Jewish orphans from the Nazis – definitely worth a watch.

THEATRE

The National Theatre continues its excellent streaming line-up with A Midsummer Night’s Dream on 25 June. Captured live from the Bridge Theatre in 2019, this version stars Game of Thrones‘ Gwendoline Christie as Titania, as well as Oliver Chris (One Man, Two Guvnors), David Moorst (Allelujah!) and Hammed Animashaun (Barber Shop Chronicles) as Oberon, Puck and Bottom.
