7 things you should be watching this week

So we made it to February and we’ve got one more month to go until the world starts to look like a greener, friendlier place. Here’s what Muddy is watching to make these winter nights fly by.

Parks and Recreation (Netflix) – Mon 1 Feb

All seven seasons of this much beloved mockumentary sitcom are coming to Netflix today so you can binge to your heart’s content. Amy Poehler plays Leslie Knope, a public sector employee whose big ideas are continually thwarted by bureaucracy. She’s joined by a stellar team including Rashida Jones, Chris Pratt and Aziz Ansari. Very funny. And, unfortunately for all of us willingly paying our taxes into the big government machine, very well observed.

Malcolm and Marie (Netflix) – Fri 5 Feb

Zendaya had quite a 2020 and while the rest of us attempted variations on banana bread, she filmed a full length feature film with Sam Levinson (creator of Euphoria) and her co-lead, David Washington (son of Denzel). Malcolm and Marie is an emotional deep dive  into a couple’s relationship as it moves into a different phase and having been filmed exclusively in the Caterpillar House in Carmel, is a feast for the eyes too.

Bliss (Amazon Prime) – Fri 5 Feb

Owen Wilson and Salma Hayek star in this Amazon Original sci-fi, where a man living a disordered life, following divorce and being fired from this job, is encouraged to see the world as a simulation by a mysterious beautiful woman. A more romantic version of The Matrix. Perhaps.

ZeroZeroZero (Sky Atlantic) –  Thurs 4 Feb

The first series of this Italian drama that follows the movement of cocaine across continents is now available in the UK. It got rave reviews when it aired last year and features Gabriel Bryne, Andrea Riseborough and Dane DeHaan as an American shipping family who are brokering the deals. Intense.

Musicals: The Greatest Show (BBC One) – Sun 7 Feb

The Greatest Show

In this one-off show, Sheridan Smith hosts this pre-recorded performance at the London Palladium, featuring stars such as Amanda Holden, Michael Ball and Nicole Scherzinger belting out songs from the West End’s biggest productions. Grab the gin and sing along.

Joanna Lumley’s Home Sweet Home – Travels in My Own Land (ITV) – Tues 2 Feb

Home Sweet Home

Joanna Lumley, of course, was born in India, during the last days of the Raj and has travelled the globe through her work, but this very easy-on-the-mind three parter follows her on a very personal journey of the British Isles taking in the Coronation Street cobbles and the Whitby seaside. Fabulous.

Guinness Six Nations (ITV) – Sat 6 Feb

Six Nations

It’s that time of year again and if you want to hang onto some shred of normality, tuning into the rugby might be soothing. Or it might not. But worth a try, right?  Italy play France at 2.15pm then England face the auld enemy Scotland at 4.45pm.
