Grab yourself a mini masterpiece from £50

If buying art leaves you with a blank expression to match your blank walls, then read on, laydee. Before you make an expensive mistake, we called in the experts for some top tips.

Dream of having a Chapman Brothers, Julian Opie or a Boy George original hanging on your wall? Now is your chance, and you won’t need to sell a vital organ to afford it. The annual Art On A Postcard auction, in aid of the Hepatitis C Trust, ends tomorrow, and you can bid on 280 lots – many by world famous artists.

This is usually a secret auction, held in London, with only your art nose (and those telltale high bids to guide you). This year, it’s going online, you know what you’re bidding on and Newbury-based auction house, Dreweatts is running the show.

Alongside the biggest names, look out for pieces by Molly Brocklehurst, Lucy Bryant, Eliot Lord and Heath Kane. The auction end on Thu 9 Jul at 2pm, to give you an idea of what is one offer, here’s our 10 lots to watch…

JULIAN OPIE, DEER 3, LOT 50

Art on a Postcard Julian Opie Deer 3 thick black outline of a deer

Artist Julian Opie rose to the higher ranks of the art world in the 80s and was famously commissioned to create Blur’s Best of album cover in 2000. Opie also created an LED projection for U2’s Vertigo world tour, and in 2008 he designed the set for Wayne McGregor’s ballet Infra. Basically, the man’s a big deal. Bidding for Deer 3 is currently at £1,900 but his work sells in the tens of thousands.

JAKE AND DINOS CHAPMAN, SOLAR ANUS, LOT 276

Jake and Dino Chapman Solar Anus Art on a Postcard red smiley face with colour rays

Turner nominated (but lost to Grayson Perry), Jake and Dinos Chapman are often described as the enfants terrible of BritArt. They kicked off their careers as Gilbert and George’s assistants, found fame as part of the Young British Artists in the 1990s, alongside Emin and Hirst and have a talent starting wars of words with journalists. But their work is super collectable – an old masterpiece sold at auction for £39,000, once manipulated by the Chapman Brothers later sold for £750,000. Bidding for Solar Anus is currently at £600.

BOY GEORGE, UNTITLED, LOT 277

Art on a Postcard Boy George blue and black clown piece

Boy George is man who wears a lots of hats – singer, songwriter, DJ, fashion designer, writer and ex con. So artist seems a natural next step and he made his world art debut in Monaco (posh). Now he is making his Art On A Postcard debut, with an Untitled piece. Bidding is currently at £1,600, but one of his previous charity sketches sold for £4,300, outselling Angle of the North artist Antony Gormley.

LIAM ASHLEY CLARK, A BUNGALOW WITH BOOBS FOR ROOF TILES, LOT 154

Black outline drawing of Bungalow with boobs for roof tiles by rising star artists ?????

Liam Ashley Clark is the one to watch. This Norfolk-based artist was selected as a 2019 Bloomberg New Contemporary and included in the Saatchi Art Rising Stars report of the same year. His work is a careful blend of humour and political commentary, largely in painting, drawing and photography. His contribution to the Art On A Postcard auction is a single-storey version of a piece he created in 2018 – A House With Boobs For Roof Tiles. Bidding for A Bungalow With Boobs For Roof Tiles is at £70.

CARL MOORE, NEON BULL, LOT 123

Carl Moore makes work that sits on that fine line between comedy and tragedy. Animals pretending to be other animals, dripping in paint that start to resemble a barcode. It’s pretty much how we look when decorating out houses. Carl has contributed three postcards to the auction. Current bidding for Neon Bull is £110.

WHATSHISNAME, HAPPY POPEK BALLOON DOG, LOT 138

If you love Jeff Koons and managed to see his stunning exhibition at the Ashmoleon in Oxford, you might see a passing resemblance to his balloon dog here. Satirical artist Whatshisname (aka Sebastian Burdon) fuses the digital and the traditional to create something far more provocative – balloon dogs playing with a ball, pooing and, um, doing it doggy style. There are three lots available, and bidding on Happy POPek Balloon Dog is at £70.

MOLLY BROCKLEHURST, GARDEN PARTY, LOT 89

Molly Brocklehurst artist green and red blocks of colour with retro image of children playing

Figurative artist Molly Brocklehurst is another Saatchi Art rising star and also appeared in the Maddox Gallery’s Top 10 Women To Watch. Her muted colour palette and nostalgic subjects blue the lines between past and present, fact and fiction. Molly has created four pieces for the auction. Garden Party bidding is currently at £80. Her larger piece sell for £3K-£4k.

KEV MUNDY, DUCK TANGLE, LOT

Happy-go-lucky Kev Munday will undoubtedly bring a smile to your face with his unique style that defies age and offers up a distinctly off-the-wall approach. Using an assortment of mediums, from marker pens to digital art, Munday finds his inspiration from Japanese kawaii graphics, South American tribal art and the sheer energy and movement of colour. He has two lots here and bidding for Duck Tangle is currently at £120.

NASSER AZAM, QUEEN, LOT 99

The Queen’s shielding at Windsor Castle and she’s a woman you won’t find slobbing out on the sofa in a pair of joggers. British contemporary artist Nasser Azam’s mixed coronavirus collage of Her Maj make this a highly prised lot. Nasser’s semi-abstract style of painting has been compared with that of Willem de Kooning. He painted activist Malala Yousafzai’s official portrait and has led art expeditions to the Antarctica and space. Current bidding is at £360 for Queen.
